Hi all,

I'm about to replace the prop shaft centre bearing on my '97 2.3 auto saloon having obtained the bearing and rubber mount.

I've read the excellent write-up of the job on the site (thank you! who-ever it was - btw) but I have a few questions:

1. The bearing appears to be directional (ie front to back), does it matter which way it goes?

2. Do you need to add any grease to it before fitting?

3. When pulling the shaft out of the transmission, is there anything to avoid; eg bits that might be damaged, or oil spill to catch.

4. Will the mounting bracket come off the car with the whole shaft intact or does the shaft need to be separated in two first.

5. Presumably you need to turn the shaft to get at all the bolts into the diff flange. What's the best way to do this?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

5. Lifting one or both wheels off the ground will enable you to turn the prop, with the handbrake off.

2. I would think so, bearings are usually supplied just with light greasing to prevent rust, apply high melting point grease to the bearing rollers.

4. The propshaft can only really be separated into its two parts when removed from the car.

Good Luck, it looks a real swine of a job what with the exhaust and the exhaust heatshields having to be removed to get at the bearing.
Remember to keep a note of the diff/prop bolts and which holes they came from . Using Coloured chalk while dismantling is a handy tip.

Going to do the bearing tomorrow, to stave off the boardom (is that how you schpell "boardom; I guess it is - hehe).

Just thought I'd review the instructions before doin' it.

Will let you know how I get on; as a 3 spanner man these sort of jobs are a little scary ( know what I mean?).

Ok, well I did the bearing today and I have to say I found it fairly hard work. The only real problems with the fitting though were:

1. Reassembling the prop-shaft without refitting the rubber mounting/bracket - doh! and,

2. Being so tired by the end that I hadn't the strength to get the exhaust back onto it's rubber hangers - a tea break and a helping xmas cake sorted that out though and it was finished.

The TEST DRIVE however was a little disappointing. Whilst the rumbling noise (around 45-55mph) had pretty much gone (this was why I was doing the job in the first place), it was replaced by a noise I can only describe as a low staccato whistle beating in time with the prop-shaft revolution.

The noise disappears at speed but is very annoying when slowing to a stop and again when pulling away. I'm a private hire driver so I need to fix this before next week when I get back to work so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, sice I'm asking for help I guess I'd better confess a guilty secret.

When I was fitting the bearing onto the prop-shaft the 30mm socket I was using to "press" the bearing on was too short by quite a long way.

To get round this I used a larger socket on the outer casing of the bearing and, although this seated the bearing, in the process it bent this outer casing.

From memory I think this would cause the bent out bit to rub against the bit on the shaft that it's supposed to slip over. Could this be the problem. If so, do you think it willwear down and go away or should I redo the bearing, or is it likely to be something else altogether?

Maybe the prop rubbing on one of the heatshields ?
