Title: Automat gearbox DONT work proper.
Post by stigrolf on Dec 30th, 2006, 11:18pm
Hi everyone and a happy new year at first.
at second i have a question that i hope get answers to.

On my ultima 2.0 16v -95 the automat stop working after that a "kind" person wanted to wash my engine and didnt see that the fusebox was open  >:( The problem is that the gearbox dont go on 4th or 5th gear, and it is much annoying to drive in 90km/h at 3300 rpm. I sended the car to a ford garage to fix it. They did work on the car for 4 weeks and did not manage to fix the gearbox problem. They changed the fusebox and all the other problems they did find, but said: The automat is broken, you have to replace it!
I tried to push them to continue serch but they didnt.
The fault begin after the wash. Sure it is possible that the gearbox has died but it happend in the same time as the wash! The summer, winter and sport mode dont work either.
I hope that someone can give me a hint so i can tell the garage what to do to try more before replace it.

Thanks in advance and a Happy New Year to all.

/Ronny

Hi Ronny, i'm 99.99% sure the automatic scorpios never had a 5th gear, so it sounds like it isn't going into overdrive (4th). Water may have worked its way into other parts of the loom elsewhere and possibly be shorting something out, i'm sure an expert will be along soon to pinpoint you to the likely culprit...

Happy New Year to you too!

Matt

Of course you are right  [], i did meant the overdrive  :-[.
I hope that someone knows this better than the mechanics at ford where i lives. I have tried to change the oil and the solenoid or what its called on english, and clean the filter, yeah everything that i can do, and the mechanics has done "everything" he was able to.

When he (mechanic) strapped it up to the ford computer it says that everything is alright, but the diagnostics for a car that is old like this isnt much worth.
I have 2 exactly identical ultima, one is -95 and one is -97. This cars is probably the most comfotable cars to drive and travel with so me and my "wife" have one each.
Thanks for your answer and hope that someone can pinpoint the problem for me.

Hello Ronny, sounds like an electrical fault. If the autobox is really dying you'll more than likely get loss of drive, heavy thumps in and out of gear and the transmission fluid will look like cooking oil after a long day at McDonalds (brown with black bits floating around). If the car drives ok otherwise then don't let them con you for a new box until everything else has been tested. I had a recon Ford dealer autobox last year (2005), I'm speaking from experience of the trouble I had afterwards.

Loss of overdrive is normally related to a fault with the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) and I remember somebody had the same problem when the mass airflow sensor went wrong. First step is always to get it scanned, if the dealer hasn't done this yet then they shouldn't have your car in the first place. Tell them to scan it and ask to see the results; if you get error codes somebody on here will be able to help you. Also, are there any other faults whcich have started since the wash?

Good luck mate :)

Regards, Bruce.

Hi and thanks. Yes, i have more faults. When i put the drive in, it thumps (think that is the word) and take a long time to get in. The turning lights is weird some times, slows up, stops, speeding and more. The headwindow heating has stopped to work.

Probably more faults that i dont know yet!

hi if you have had the engine bay pressure washed then it is most likely to be water in the harness that will cause alsorts of things to happen.

Yes, he pressure washed it! I dont know the word harness (sorry im swedish) but it must be a way to get the gears working again i hope!

I really hope that someone knows what to do.

Thank you all for reading and care for my problem.

PLEASE mate, get it scanned before you agree to any expensive work...I wish I had.

Thump/delay into drive is a known fault (I had it on mine) but with all the other electrical faults you're getting it could be the autobox loom playing up...rather than letting it sit in your local dealer for weeks on end, it needs a good auto electrician who can test it through.

Pull the auto fluid dipstick (the black one) and see what the fluid looks like. By the time my autobox failed, the fluid was dark brown like dirty engine oil and smelled burnt. The ideal colour is a dirty pink/tan colour that doesn't smell burnt.

Good luck :)

Regards, Bruce.

Normaly cleaning the MAF is the first port of call, but checking the MAF plug for water ingress would be advisable. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm
