Title: Headlights came on while I was out
Post by johnboy on Jan 2nd, 2007, 11:57am
I was out New years eve when my wife phoned me and imformed me that my headlights had come on on their own and she could not turn them off.  She said there was no sound of the horn going off so I presumed it wasn't the alarm.
It has resulted in a flat battery and now I can't start it.

There was some heavy wind about so I was wondering
if that could have set it off or is it because the car has not been used since 21st of december.

hi there

sounds like the classic wet/damp fuseboxes. try taking a hairdryer to them and maybe a wee bit of wd40.

do you have the battery cover fitted?

I've had the samen problem some months ago. After a long search it was a shortcut between the cigarette lighter (constant 12V+) en the little bulb in the lighter!

Thanks guys. Yes I have a battery cover fitted. I have just jump started it and took it for a run it now seems ok but I will have to keep my eyes open for it happening again.

Could cause a problem when you are out and about

I had that on my old red S reg. Everytime I shut the ashtray, the lights came on on the dashboard!!

Turned out to be the shorting of the 12v supply to the cigarette lighter, the positive on the ashtray lamp and ground!

I found that if the multipin plug to the central (drivers side) fuse box is not fitted correctly the headlights would come on. Make sure that the pivoting lugs are located before locking down the plug with the lever.

My 2.9 12v estate did exactly the same thing heavy rain turned the lights on !! just tried to keep the fusebox dry. This worked for a couple a years. if it was damp though it would flatend the battery overnight. I used to just disconnect if it looked like rain overnight. Then about 3 months ago it had been parked with the battery connected, I jump started it and went to work. when I came out of work it was flat again. when I tried to jump start. smoke started pouring out of the N/S fusebox as it was melting!!!! any one selling a fusebox?
