Title: 2.9 12v Electrics
Post by Unbeatentrack on Jan 4th, 2007, 11:18pm
Hi y'all - kind regards from a forum newbie.

I think I'm answering my own question here but some moral support or advice on alternatives would be welcome!

Reading recent postings there seems to be a host of electrical problems and "my car won't start" type subjects. Well, here's my story:

In October my 1996 2.9 12v estate developed a problem - every time I attempted to move the gearlever out of park the alarm would sound. It would drive fine, as long as you could stand the noise, er, which I couldn't! I chased the cause but couldn't find the problem, in the end I found the electical multi-pin connection beneath the dash and pulled it. No noise (hussar!!) but also no intermittent wipe, no interior lights (hmmm!)

At least the car was drivable - but just before Christmas it decided not to start. I chased this problem and I thought I had fixed it yesterday when I replaced relay 17 (Engine Management System). It fired straight up and purred. I even replaced the multi-pin connection under the dash and the alarm was gone (perfect!!) but, now I'd lost front lights (all of them), the wipers and the washer. (buggar!!!)

Went out this morning and it wont start. (arrrggghhh!)

All the fuses were ok, both fuse boxes were dry, the drain holes clear and the battery cover has always been in place. However, it seems likely that the fuse boxes are somehow contaminated and I've just taken out the driver's side box (jeez - is that fiddly or what? Any tips on reconnecting it back up?). I'll strip it and rebuild it tomorrow and then repeat on the battery side fuse box. If this doesn't fix it I'll re-enact the Basil Fawlty scene and thrash the bloody thing with a fallen branch.

(Sorry - I know we're all here to cherish the old Scorp's but it's OK to show emotion right?)

As mentioned - morale support most welcome, but also any extra tips on the fusebow rebuild (I've seen the photos on the main site), any tips on how to re-connect the thing or even any tips on leading a better life and bringing peace and harmony to the world......

Greg
