Title: Re: MECHANIC Post by DEBBIE on Jan 5th, 2007, 9:30pm A Big Hello & Thank You :-* I live in the Wickford area, its real nice to know l'm not alone with my Sorpio and it's problems. The car feels very light on the steering and tends to wonder. l had the tracking and balancing done it was o.k. for a while but the main problem is still there, also there is slight judder sometimes if l break a bit to hard. (I am no speed freak). Once again many thanks Hope to hear from you soon Debbie |

Title: Re: MECHANIC Post by Tony_Bradley on Jan 5th, 2007, 10:11pm Hi Good article on the wishbone bushes ..... Could it be warped discs if it only happens under hard braking ? Regards Tony |

Title: Re: MECHANIC Post by harry.m1byt on Jan 5th, 2007, 11:24pm Debbie, I had fairly similar problems to you, except I got the brake judder only on initial application of the brakes. The steering felt imprecise, seeming to float at speed and not quite as predictable as it should be on the bends. A new pair of rear bushes for the front wishbone sorted it out completely. The originals looked fine, until I got them out but the difference between old and new bushes once they were removed was very obvious - that might explain your garage missing the problem. It is a cheap thing to try - £35 delived from Fordpartsuk and fitting is an uncomplicated breeze. An hours work to do both for someone with just fairly basic tools and knowledge. It is a small part of the work described here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/wishbone.htm It is the bush under the saddle clamp shown in the second photo from the top, and is called "Rear bearing clamp - 4 bolts @ 23 Nm" costing £12 each in the line diagram at the very bottom of that page. Try that as a first step, then if your problem is not solved the money is not wasted if carry on to replace the other two bushes and wishbone. The judder has gone, has as the floating feeling and my steering is absolutely precise. |

Title: Re: MECHANIC Post by mr._floppy on Jan 6th, 2007, 1:16am Yep, classic symptoms of worn wishbones, either the front bushes, rear bushes , lower balljoints, or all three. Roughly £100 per wishbone+ £15 for rear bush. If Ford Europe still make 'em that is . |

Title: Re: MECHANIC Post by jonnycab on Jan 6th, 2007, 1:40am Another thing worth considering is the state of the front tyres. If you live in Wickford then no doubt you notice this problem more when on that horrible road called the A127. The lorry gulleys on that road are like ditches in parts & if you have the 225/50/16 tyres fitted, then the car tends to want launch itself across the carriageway every time you come out of a gulley ??? I had bad wandering & so replaced the wishbone rear bushes. This helped but still there was a problem with the car wandering. After checking everything I came to the conclusion that it had to be the front tyres. They were getting quite low (between 2 & 3mm) & were looking unevenly worn in places (probably due to the wishbone rear bushes being shot). So I had two new tryes fitted. The difference in handling was noticed instantly. The car now goes in a dead straight line & is no longer affected by bumps & holes in the road, & more importantly, driving on the A127 is now a reasonably pleasant experience :) P.S.....I'm in Wickford also :) |

Title: Re: MECHANIC Post by Jim on Jan 6th, 2007, 1:43am A quick check for these bushes (really basic, but quite effective) is: Hand brake on. Foot on front of front wheel towards the top. Sharp push to try to move car backwards. There should be no appreciable movement of front wheel. If it does move backwards, and it is quite noticeable, it indicates that the bush is worn. |
