Title: Cossie is jumpy
Post by drawlings on Jan 7th, 2007, 12:24pm
Hey all,

I have got this issue with my cosworth.

If I rev the car up to 3500 revs, the engine cuts the revs to 0 then back again. Also, if I drive the car 40 mph + the revs jump around slightly, but this forces the car to jump.

I have replaced as many things as I can like the MAF sensor, coil pack and leads, idle sensor.

I did notice that when reving the car there were little shinny bits coming out of the exhaust tail pipe if I held my hand over it.

Now I am not sure if this is a Cat problem or not but I dont want to change this in case it is not.

thanks

Also, one other thing. I someone from the Essex, Thurrock could be so kind to help me read the ECU on the car since I don't have the lead to connect to my car.

Thanks

hi there

the bits from the exhaust could well be the cat(s) breaking up. is there a rattle from them?

re the 'jumping'. maybe the exhaust is getting blocked with the cat(s). have you check ALL the wiring? is this the car that had a starting issue (starter?)? wasn't it sitting around for a while? maybe you need to go back to basics here. check spark plugs, wiring to lambdas, petrol, etc.

and why do want to rev the engine all the time? if you're wanting a proble with the engine, you'll quickly get one by reving the engine at standstill. you shouldn't be taking the rev right up unless you have a load on, as on a rolling road.

Hey scorpio man,

yes this is the car with the starter problem, I replaced the starter motor as I currently have a donor car (My old cossie with a blown head gasket).

I finally got it started early after cleaning the plugs cos they were flooded and had a little bit of oil on them. There was a popping noise coming from the engine bay, but it cleared itself after short while.

I have just takin the car for a spin and even under 30mph the car was being jumpy, the revs would drop the come back again.

Is there a easy way to tell which cat maybe at fault? I did notice while changing the starter motor that the cat nearest to it had been replaced by a pattern part.

thanks

Silly but simple suggestion.
Are you able to tap the cats firmly cos sometimes there is an obvious rattle?
