Title: 12 valve a dead un .. NO ITS ALIVE!!!
Post by Geoff_W on Jan 20th, 2007, 10:19am
Here we go again.

Having got the car back on the road following the electrical problems I had to go up to Edinburgh on Thursday, got up there no problems, came back last night in torrential rain and about Newcastle noticed a gradual drop in power and revs.

Put it down to damp but paused on journey checked oil and water looked for visible signs of damp  / poor connections, nothing obvious went back to car and it started Ok and continued, just short of Scotch Corner power and revs started dropping back kept dropping out of cruise and had to pull over thought it had gone into limp mode, would sit and idle but would not rev.

Crept off A1M and rang RAC. Local garage came out and mechanic had a quick look but with gallons of rain and a gale blowing could not do much.

Would rev fairly smoothly up to about 2200 revs but at 2250 loads of induction and some mechanical noise and rough running and revs drop away.

Had sufficient power to drive off the recovery wagon on to my drive and is sat there now. Started it up this morning and it is sounding pretty slushy, though started first turn of key but will not rev even gently.

Checked the fault finder but no obvious like for like problem.

Anybody out there had similar?

Is there a 12valve expert out there that I can talk to?

Would appreciate thoughts,  bright ideas and options.

Geoff

12v is fairly bullet proof, check for blocked cat, fuel pressure, monitor llambda voltage while running, will indicate fuel shortage, cap, rotor, amplifyer, forget oil starvation unless very loud 'tappet' noise.

Thanks Martin,

Ideas much appreciated. I will be getting it picked up and taken in later in the week.

I will flag up what comes to light.

Thanks for the input.

Hi Geoff.

I have a 12v 2.9 too. AND we've had this problem.

Go under your glove compartment, and you will see the ECU sitting in a tray, which simply clips to the frame. Drop the ECU out, and unscrew the connector (10mm socket or spanner needed). It's a five minute job, and nothing to worry about. Really easy to check.

If the connector and pins are swimming in water, that's your problem. With a bit of luck you'll be able to dry it out, and then silicone grease all the pins up to prevent a re-occurrence.

If not, there's plenty of second hand ECU's about for about a fiver or so each.

The water comes in through a large loom grommet which is behind the battery, and then runs down into this socket. You need to re-seal this grommet, and I assume you have a battery tray as they are absolutely essential on these cars.

We had EXACTLY these symptoms during heavy rain last year, and this solved it. We too though that we'd 'broken' the car.

Hope this helps you.  :)

Keith,

Glad to hear about a more straightforward fix, that makes a refreshing change, I hope that this works out the same way.

If not theres a replacement engine here for you ;)

Picked up a 12v Ultima estate the other night for £60, full pumice leather, reversing sensors, CD changer the lot :)

Gearbox seems to be on the way out though but the engines running sweet as a nut :) (hmmm what does that mean? sweet as a nut?)

Stuart

Now if that was sweet as liquorice I could tell you ;D

Going to be away on my travels until the 12th February so will have to leave things until then.

Sounds like you got a really great donor there.

When I got back from my travels, the easiest thing was to put the 2litre back on the road and I just got on with life.

My 12valve has been sat on the drive since my last post. Two flat tyres looking ever so sad.

With the 2.0 16valve being cubed in April and waiting for settlement I was missing having a Scorp to drive and I got a colleague with a Garage in Outwood to recover it last weekend and see what could be done.

From the description he was pretty sure that it was a collapsed CAT so we recharged the battery, removed the CAT and it started first time. Running sweetly.

So the catalytic convertor had restricted the exhaust flow and the engine suffocated to a standstill.

Anyhow it is in for an MOT first thing in the morning and we will see what sitting for 15 months means in test terms.

Hopefully this will be my ride to Harewood

So absolutely spot on first time Martin Rowe, well guessed, take a bow!
;D

Running sweetly, had new flex brake pipes up front, disks and pads front and rear so it should stop and a new battery so that should be nice. Now I just need to lay on some polish for Harewood.

;D ;D

Petrol prices are soaring and you upgrade from a 2.0 to a 2.9!
How the other half live!! ;)

Fair point, I reckon if it proves to be reliable then lpg is in order.

Thats creeping up too :) 67p / litre down here.....

and just wait till Gordy decides too many people are getting away with it and inflicts full duty on that too....

Only a matter of time, but apparently there was a government promise that motorists  would get three years notice before the scheme is cancelled.

Only concern that I have is that it is a government promise
