Title: Seeping  Fuel  Tank
Post by mr._floppy on Feb 4th, 2007, 1:10am
On a fill up today I noticed  wetness  and a petrol smell  from  the   tank,  the rust hole  is  situated above the  seam  ( so it  only leaks when tank is more than half full )   adjacent  to  the  diff.

1.  Is  there  a  quick  proprietory  sealant/cement   for
    this type of  leak?

2. ........and will  the repair  satisfy an eagle-eyed MOT
    tester ?

Quick Steel or Plastic Padding Leak Fix are both good  ;)

But for a real good permanent seal, have a look at this company....

.......http://www.devcon.com

I used their steel putty to repair the t-stat housing on my MK1 Granny about 8 years ago & it's still solid  ;)

I agree. These steel paddings are excellent.

Obviously this is one job where you remove any crud, before you do the repair, with hand tools and NOT with a power tool where sparks could prove interesting!!  ;D  ;D

save yourself all that hassle with the bodges, buy a new 1 from these people

https://sslrelay.com/buypartsby.co.uk/fuel-tank-details.php?recordID=86

£45.50 + vat

makes all the bodging hardly worth it

£45.50 sounds VERY good, but if it's only a very small seepage, then padding would still make a lasting and effective repair. I'd only buy a new tank if it was a terminal leak myself. A lot of hassle changing the gauge sensor, filler, electrics, might uncover more problems than at first anticipated.

These modern adhesives and sealants etc are really very very good. Really depends how small the leak is, and where it is.

SD, I agree but if the tank is rusting through in one place then it won't be long before it springs a leak in another ;)

If it really is an isolated rust pin hole and is in a flat part of the tank, then you could try the self tapper solution. Screw a large, course threaded,  self tapper with a large pan type head into the pin hole, with a soft washer to provide the seal.

Thanks chaps,  while  the  price  of  a  new  tank  is  surprisingly  cheap  (  for Ford that is )    the  hassle   of  fitting  it  is  far   too  much  bother.

As  it's  ( hopefully )   an  isolated  rust   bubble,   a  quick  splodge  of  sealant should   do the  trick .

Not much hassle involved, two bolts holding the straps on and a couple of screws at the filler neck.
The pipes/wires all connect through the top of the tank and come off in one piece unscrewed from above

I got a replacement tank from Buypartsby last year. It was fairly easy to fit although the original strap bolts were too short and I had to find some longer ones.  The only real problem is what to do with the old tank. The Household Waste outfit don't like old petrol tanks.

I have had excellent results from the two part putty stuff halfords sell, used it many times and never had it fail.
Apparrently it can even be sanded and painted (may help at mot time) ;)

The  leak's  getting  worse now,  I made the mistake of  parking the car  facing  down  a  hill  with  resultant  pointing  and   tut-tutting  from passers-by  as  valuable  petrol  from  the  tank  piddled   down  the  street.

If  Highlander can  furnish me  with  the  address  ( I've  forgotten  it  already )   of  his   Broxburn  Stately  Home,    I'd  like  to  pay  him  a  visit   for  a replacement  tank.

hmmm looks terminal now me thinks!!

picture the scene...... innocent member of the public strolling along having a fag, then chucks the fag end on the floor just behind this car with a slightly leaky fuel tank...........BOOM !!!

and for £45 new, this danger could have been avoided rather than debated. All I can think is the kid who owns this has money to burn, petrol costs 85p or so a litre and his is spilling onto the highway or evaporating away !!

does this come down to lack of maintainance/servicing as mentioned in a previous thread. Scorpios ran on a shoe string.

tsk tsk

Aaaaaar Jim Lad. I agree. Tis a bad thing when the old chewing gum falls off, and leaves leaky things on the road.

I can only be 'umble M'Lud!! It's definitely the noo tank methinks! ;D

Noo tank   and  a  noo  boot  solenoid /motor thingy too , I can't get me boot lid closed  now!

Had to drive home with  a bit of  flex   holding the boot lid down  and I will have to leave the car  unlocked   all night as the the alarm will activate if  the boot isn't properly closed.
I'm thinking  the Mondeo has the same  solenoid fitted to its  tailgate, should be easy to  get one from a scrappy.

   Some Valentines Day   :'(

Even   my   beloved   Scorpio  doesn't   love  me,

         sob, sob.

Boot lock   now   fixed    ( the  Mondeo  actuator  is exactly  the same  )    and through  the  kind generosity of  that  Top  Man   Highlander  I  now  have  a  replacement   fuel  tank.  8)

Will   endeavour  to fit   it  when  the  weather   is more clement.
