Title: S180 CPC - Could this be a Blown Turbo? '98 Diesel
Post by Jaye_Martin on Feb 5th, 2007, 10:07pm
I have had loads of cars over the years but the one I have fallen in love with is my 2.5TD GHIA X  Pack Auto Ultima. (I drive it in preference to my Merc..so I must be mad)..However it causes me tons of drama's.

It was written off in 1998 with 1900 miles on the clock and purchased from the Insurance company. My mate rebuilt it drove it for 36k then sold it to a lady in Hastings who then had another major accident in it which was again repaired. She drove it until it showed  70k on clock then went to sell it and the Ford garage bottled out because it was on the hit list..so I bought it from her for 600 quid including the private plate which was C11 BSK (HER name was Barbara King) Having driven it for 8k , I was thrashing it through five ashes towards Eastbourne when all of a sudden there was a swishing type noise loss of power and enough black smoke to remind me of the invasion of Kuwait. My mate said it is the turbo blown up....is this true?..I have removed the turbo and it spins freely, butappears alright...all the fins are ok and there is no play in it....could I have some advice please?..also Ford want 750 for a new turbo..is there any suggestions ..because i love this car and dont want to scrap it..does anybody have a turbo for sale?
Thank you....and do you think it is the turbo thats blown?

(Jaye... Apologies but I have added the outline of the problem to the title so as to let people know what the problem is and maybe guide a few diesel experts in here. Just putting the reg may have been a little misleading to some!...Baz, Admin)

Hi and welcome

I'm no diesel expert but I think the turbo doesn't just blow up like that, it's more possible that the EGR valve went open and sticked there. This would explain loss of power and lots of black smoke as burnt gases return into the intake and the engine runs with incomplete burns.

Later edit: have a look at this also

Hi
I am also a diesel owner who experienced a similar problem. It turned out only to be a hose blown off the turbo. Might be worth checking all the intercooler hoses.

Hi there, could be any of whats been said above... when mine started throwing out tonnes of black smoke it turned out to be the egr stuck open which was somehow caused by the inlet and exhaust gaskets blowing quite a bit.
If the fins are ok and theres no play i wouldn't have thought there would be anything wrong with the turbo itself, if the oil seals had gone then i would have assumed it would be emmiting blue (burning oil) smoke as opposed to black.
Yours is the later version of the engine so i'd give the MAP a good looking over aswell.

Matt
