Title: Unwanted cold air flow into car
Post by AJLElectronics on Feb 19th, 2007, 10:22am
Hello, I have a 2.3 Ultima estate recently purchased. A few problems to sort out but one I am unsure of... At higher (like motorway) speeds, there is a steady flow of cold air emerging from the gaps around the steering column shroud, such as where the adjustment lever sits. This cold air is unaffected by any setting of the climate control or fan speed, so I believe it is coming in through the bulkhead. Is there anywhere common to these cars that I should investigate?

The sunroof gears are stripped too but I have a new motor unit on the way.

Hello and Welcome to the site  ;D

Make sure your sunroof mechanisim isnt seized, give it a good grease and get it moving before you try your new motor or you'll end up with stripped gears again.

Try the grommets round the fuseboxs in the engine bay for the air leak?

Another place where air can come in is where the matrix pipes exit the bulkhead.

If you look at them from the engine side, there should be a metal plate around the pipes with a piece of foam behind it (you should see the edge of the foam sticking out around the plate).

If there is no plate there, then that means the matrix has been replaced at some point & the fitter didn't or couldn't get the metal plate back on....hence leaving a hole for air to rush in  :)

Just a theory mind you  ;)

Matrix pipes? Is that the heater matrix? I have looked into the problem briefly and have not found anything obvious yet. Will have to be brave and start wielding the screwdriver I suppose. Just as an aside, I found the air flow meter plug just hanging loose. Didn't make a great deal of difference replacing it though!

Yep...heater matrix pipes.

You'll probably need a torch so see properly.
Look on the bulkhead at the back of the cylinder head/inlet manifold....you should see a shiney plate behind the aircon drip pipe.  :)

Mine does this as well and I have never really bothered about it.... I might have a look now someone else is suffering cold thighs!
