What things would cause the inhibitor switch to not function? so car can be started in gear?

faulty pringle switch possibly, does yours start in gear??

Could also be that Fuse R11 has blown. this is the power feed to the switch.  ;)

If the fuse goes it wont start at all, even in P or N

No not yet will try that over the w/e, guess the only way is to change it for a known good one
