Title: TD No boost, running out of ideas.
Post by Leeky on Feb 28th, 2007, 6:42pm
Hey guys

a few weeks ago i was on the motorway and i noticed at some point during the trip i lost the ability to boost.

The car now pulls ok-ish up to around 2200 but then seems to become asthmatic after that.

I've seem the guide on this site about cleaning the afm and changing the map sensor.

The symptoms im getting are so similar so that article that i went out and got a new MAP sensor....which made no difference.

I then get the AA chap to clean out my AFM for me....again no difference.

He checked the car for error codes...there were none.

He disconnected my AFM and it produced an error code which he cleared after plugging it back in.

While it was unplugged the engines idle did not change at all. Still revved up exactly the same so he said it could be the afm is not reading an airflow change.

So i just fitted a new AFM and the problem is still there...

Any ideas?  ???

I've just stuck a load of injector cleaner in also but as of yet (30miles drive) it has not really shown any noticeable improvement.

As far as i know the turbo isnt broken. No whining or anything and im pretty sure i can hear a faint whistle as though it is spinning.

Im not using an oil or water and the car is not smoking either.

It like someone has flicked a switch and turned off the turbo.

Im thinking from here my best bet would be to check all hoses over with a fine toothed comb and then move onto injectors and/or fuel pressure regulator.

Edited...

Just read Sector-9's guide to repairing the PCM. Im wondering what are the symptoms he was getting which required him to change the PCM?

I could quite possibly be that im actually experienceing a missfire.....but would that prevent me from getting boost?

check egr valve took mine apart cleaned and wd40 it ,and the pipe from fuel filter to the egr valve loads of crap came out , put it all back together no more power lose

Awesome! Cheers mate! Job for the weekend  ;D

If you have an AFM then you must have the '96 onwards diesel? (be astounded at my powers of deduction!)  If so then remember that on this engine the amount of boost is controlled by the ECU using the same type of valve as controls the EGR.  However the ECU is completely different to the one I have as mine is the lowly 115PS diesel without all the fancy electronics to control it.

Before you suspect the ECU it would be wise to check the simple things first as it's more likely to be those.  Specifically, check that the small hoses connecting the turbo, modulator valve thing, and MAP sensor are all connected and aren't leaking or blocked/kinked.  If the AFM was the culprit then I'd expect problems throughout the rev range so I'd be more inclined to suspect the MAP sensor or the pipework controlling the system.

Hi Leeky

I lost my boost pressure a couple  of years ago, turned out to be the electronic valve that controls the turbo waste gate actuator. Try tracing the vacuum hose from the turbo, back to the electronic valve. Pull the same hose from the valve. If vacuum is present whilst the engine is ticking over, the valve maybe faulty. Full boost pressure is achieved when the waste gate is closed, i.e. when no vacuum is present.

Hope this helps

Ok i took everything apart last night and there was tons and tons of thick black oily crap in the inlet manifold right above where the pipe leads in from the MAP sensor. Anyone know where this crap comes from?

I cleaned it out as best i could but still no boost although i think it runs better now.

Anyone know how to reset the ECU? I hear its not a good idea to disconnect the battery as it can damage the electronics..

Afaik, the only way to reset the ECU is to disconnect the battery for a while. Never heard of anyone damaging anything by removing the battery (given that they do so in a sensible way, neg. first, avoiding short circuits, etc.)

Serious oil deposits on the inlet side of a turbo car are never good news, as they indicate wear in the turbo itself - turbos use oil film bearings so as they deteriorate, clearances increase and oil escapes into the compressor housing and into the inlet.

It could also explain your lack of boost if the engine is intercooled, as the oil clags the matrix of the cooler and prevents air getting through....

Yep  :) If your talking about the inlet manifold itself it comes from the EGR. When i did all the inlet/exhaust gaskets on mine a year ago it was just as you described inside, took me quite a while cleaning it with the parts cleaner at work but the result was well worth it  :)

Provided yours works in the same way as the 115bhp engine simply disconnect the little vacuum hose to the egr and that will mean no more exhaust is dumped into the inlet manifold and no more black gunge build up.
