Title: 2.9 non starter.
Post by Allen on Mar 2nd, 2007, 7:52pm
Hoping someone can help - i have a 96' 2.9 12 valve that for the past 12 months has served me very well.
Tuesday night i returned home from work, all things normal, parked up and left it for the night. Next morning it wouldn't start for anything.
The motor turns over very healthily, everything sounds normal but it won't fire. sometimes it sounds like its trying to fire but doesnt quite make it past the first cough.
It sounds very much like it has run out of petrol but the petrol guage is showing at the top of the red and the dash is showing 35Km to refill.
I split the fuel line at the quick release point at the lower right hand side of the engine bay and petrol came from it. I cleaned the plugs that were a bit ropy but it made no difference, the plugs are 12 months old and the car does on average 10 miles per day split between two 5 mile trips.
Does anyone have any similar experience or suggestions as to where i start checking?
Thanks
Steve

might be water in by the battery, where the aux fuse box is, or even worse down into ecu. if you feel under the glove box, is it wet? is the alarm LED flashing rapidly, or with a code? other strange electrical things happening?

Under the glovebox is perfectly dry, no sign of water ingress. The battery is fitted with the appropriate cover.
The alarm LED flashes normally (consistant with how it has flashed since i bought the car anyway).
There are nor have been any unuasual electrical happenings, everything works as it should. The only damage to the vehicle is a crack in the screen that runs  from top to bottom but this has been like this for some 2 months now.

Is there any way to check either of these?

Check the distributor cap and leads too  :) May be suffering with moisture ingress.

Check that you have 12v to the coil and then make and break that contact ... if you get the central lead to the distributor held some distance from a suitable earth point a LARGE FAT BLUE spark should appear..( you need three hands to do  this safely. ) Do not hold th elead in you hand hold it in lastic or well insulated grips .

Then if that is working suggest you try to obtain a "new" module for the distributor.

make sure distributer is turning, old fault with that v6, cam gear breaks up, though snoopy may know if they changed that design for the scorp.
