You need to check the oil level with the car at normal running temperature. I also read that you move the gearshift  back and forth a couple of times with the engine running. My autobox level was low recently and I suffered a delay before drive engaged in both forward and reverse gears.
cheers

ive just checked the auto gearbox oil, i warmed engine up, moved the gear stick through all gears a couple of times and the oil was covering all the bottom plastic part of the dipstick? the oil is red, clean and smells quiet new and there is plenty of gearbox oil, but it still will not go into reverse?...im worried now...

may need your bands tightened a little, have you noticed it takin a while to select reverse before this happened?

if its been fine until now then its not the gear oil, tomorrow try cleaning the maff, failing this its the gearbox shop im afraid, oh! is your o/d light flashing????? ???

where and what is the maff?. the o/d light does not flash?.. can the bands be tightened easily?..

bands need to done at a gearbox garage im afraid
the maff sensor is the big lump of metal connected to the airbox, have a look on the main pages for it , try here http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm

the car had a gearbox rebuild by a gearbox engineer 2 years ago (£400)and the maff was replaced 18 months ago as it would not select o/d?. so the maf wires need a squirt with carb cleaner then you think?. thanks.

possibley, i had this problem with mine after having the box completely reconditioned, you really need to get it pluged in and checked, it might be something simple, where are you in the country?

Does it go into  reverse if you rev the engine slightly when reverse is selected.

If so could either be a sticking solenoid or the bands need tightening as previously stated.

hi, if i rev the engine it still will not go into reverse? ive been told to clean the maf wire with carb cleaner but the maf was new last october? do you think its still worth doing?. thanks.

YES always try the easy things first.
The MAF is crucial with regards the engine managment and the ECU  controls the gear box.

i have just took the maf off and sprayed the wires with brake cleaner, the wires were really clean anyway as the maf is only 8 months old?. still no reverse but i put car in reverse and revved the engine and it went up to 4 thouand revs and started to die but when in neutral it revs fine all the way up the rev counter?.. where is the best place to take the car to be checked out?... fords or any garage?..help..

Sorry to hear, had exactly the same problem. Though mine reversed for 3 yards went bang and then nothing. Turn out to be some 'pin/shaft' in the box had gone. Ended up with having to have it professionally repaired. Cost approx £650 :'(

are all the 95- on scorpio autoboxes the same model or are they different for 2.0 - 2.9 engines???

The gearboxes are different depending on which model you have and the 12v is COMPLETLEY different.

how big a job is a solenoid???

Title: Re: auto box... no reverse?
Post by lucydog on Mar 4th, 2007, 6:02pm
ive just tried the car and it seems to engage gear position 1 and moves the car instantly but takes a little longer for the d gear to engage and move the car and still will not engage reverse gear?...help

Title: Re: auto box... no reverse?
Post by the_boogeyman on Mar 4th, 2007, 7:20pm
you need to know which solenoid you need to do, but they are very simple, sump off then remove the matrix and the solenoids are all there

Title: Re: auto box... no reverse?
Post by lucydog on Mar 4th, 2007, 7:24pm
so you really think its the solenoid then boogeyman, what sort of cost from a garage do you think then?.. and do you think the forward gears may start to fail if i use the car??. thanks ash

i wouldnt risk using it as it could cause more damage, best to get it booked in, or firstly ring around and explain the symptons and see what they say, but DONT take the first answer you get as gospel, some of them gearbox companys do like to fleace you, also be prepared for your box to start failing when it is fixed as on mine as they fixed one solenoid it put another one out, then the gear selector, this does happen and maywell happen when yours gets fixed, so please remember this advice and dont start panicking if it happens, you be lucky and it may not happen.

good luck
