As has been said the easiest way is to open the bonnet, place a heavy object on the switch in the cross member (by the bonnet catch). Set the alarm and then remove the object. Leave the keys in the door lock 'cos if it is working you're sure as hell going to want to switch it off quick!!. The horn for the alarm,by the way, is behind the battery.

I've found that opening the bonnet, then locking the car, then depressing the bonnet switch a few times usually sets it off.  Unlocking the car should  reset the alarm.

try setting the alarm with your window open, then put your hand in and open the door, can also test your interior motion sensors if you double lock the car!
