Hi all,
Well its been four days since I picked up the Scorpio and I'm already on headache #2.
For reference its a 2.0 16v 95 with the A4LD (E) transmission.
This morning was the first chance I had to take the vehicle on to a dual carriage way. Down went the throttle and up went the revs. The box jump through gears 1, 2 & 3 with no real issues but at 3 it stayed. I continued to raise the RPM hoping for a change but when I neared 6k RPM I gave up. (O/D wasn't turned off).
On inspection of the vehicle it turns out that a DTC of P1761 (Shift Solenoid #3 functional fault) was present, but on running a component check I could hear the click of the solenoid engaging and releasing.
Has anyone had a similar problem to this? if so what was the fix and how expensive was it ??? :(

Just did a quick forum search but not much came up on a P1761.

I suppose start with the easy stuff - is the MAF sensor clean, and the gearbox fluid up to the right level?

Hi Dave,
The Auto fluid looks fine, if anything its been overfilled. as for other faults the only other codes I pulled from the
car were:
P0232 - Fuel pump 2nd circuit high
P1408 - EGR flow out of self test range
P1131 - Lack of HO2S11 Switch sensor indicator lean
P0505 - IAC circuit fault
Of which none are related to the box.

hi,,,i had this problem around 18 months ago....i just lost 4th gear with no prior warning....the specialist removed the box and stripped it..he called me to look at was worn...im no wizz but can just remember something about a cone and something else ????he repaired it to the tune of about 330 quid if i remember right.but wow it was super smooth afterwards..i dont know how to find the post on here which might help.....just an idea what it could be..others on here are more knowledgeable.....gaz

Cheer fellas for your responses. I spoke to a specialist yesterday and he said that failure of the 3rd shift solenoid was a common problem. I should be able to get it sort with a fluid and filter change for around £165 if theres nothing else wrong as I think it just a case of dropping the sump. Fingers crossed that this fixes it. I'll post what the final result is as soon as I know
