Title: 2.3 LPG auto runs & misfires, stalls at low rev
Post by bernjmays on Apr 4th, 2007, 10:56am
Fitted new Tartarini ecu for single point system got 19mpg, over a 2 week period fell to 17mpg. Yesterday on a journey of 50 miles noticed few backfires on LPG. Later engine cut out, while moving, at low revs. I stopped, switced to petrol assuming LPG had run out. Car ran but misfired at normal revs and cut out below 1,000 rpm. I limped home by keeping revs high, on way investigated whether symptoms were due to overheating, even though temp gauge showed low temp. Lifted bonnet, touched water pipes, not hot and no smell of burning rubber.  Filled up with LPG, ran on LPG but same symptoms persisted. Started car this morning, without touching accelerator, car had higher revs than normal but then died below 1,000rpm. Help!
(p.s. dont know if this is relevant but prior to all this front cigar lighter/lamp had shorted causing 'side; headlights and dash lights to stay on when switched off, but removal of cigar lighter fuse 43/20 amp seemed to have cured problem)

hi there

you need to get a scan done to check that no damage has been done to any sensor, not just in the air intake. we need live data, not just any error codes, if any.

Hi Scorpio man,

OBD scans are a problem. I contacted Barry via Ellie the last time you suggested it on previous post, their laptop has hard drive problems. If there is anyone else near Grays, Essex with OBD capability I would be grateful to hear from you.
You may recall I have (still!) a 2.0 16v I will swap MAFs to see if that makes a difference.
I have also bought two coil packs off this site (see 'Coil pack failure') and will fit them asap.
Is there anything else I could try on the 'swaps' basis.
Many thanks

hi there

change the coil packs first and check the wiring to them. leave the MAF and the IAT sensor just now.

re a scan, see this (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=OBD;action=display;num=1175625430).....

Hi there,

I would check for any leaksaround the inlet side of things. It sounds as if the car is running very lean and this can be caused either by a vacuum leak ( listen for a sucking noise) or one of the gaskets is leaking.

Title: Re: 2.3 LPG auto no. 2 spark plug unwound!
Post by bernjmays on Mar 5th, 2008, 2:54pm
I had lumpy tickover and what sounded like back firing. Limped home. Upon ivestigation coil pack 'down pipe' on no. 2 plug on 2.3 had been eaten away! Swapped coil packs from 2.0 but on starting up got loud popping noises, no. 2 spark plug eventually came out by itself.  It seems to have worked  itself out probably over a period of weeks (I had noticed LPG smell in interior of car in previous weeks). My problem is I cannot now get spark plug to go back in any further than about 5 turns (other plugs go in about 15 turns). I wish to clean out no.2 spark plug hole (as it is probably clogged with carbon etc)with a 'tap' (as in taps & dies). What size tap do I need and what type of thread? Thanks.

I had a similar problem with my 2.3. It was running okayish on LPG but there was evidence of slight misfiring whilst pulling away using wide open throttle openings.
I switched to petrol & it kanagrooed away & gradually the symptoms cleared at about 2000 rpm.  A few days later & I could not use WOT from stanstill whilst on petrol but oddly enough LPG mode was still fine albeit still the slight mis-firing.
I spoke to my garage & they recommended I change the coilpacks. I did this & the problem still existed. I had only replaced the plugs 10K miles ago so I felt they were fine, again the HT leads I did at the same time.
To cut a long story short I my local auto factor had no plugs in stock for me but they did have the HT leads.

I swapped these out & hey presto....everything is running fine & dandy right now (although I have only covered 5 miles)
The leads I bought were £12 or so.....perhaps this will be a cheap option for you to try brother.

Hi there
I have a 1995 Ford Scorpio 16 valve 2L automatic car, which I bought 6 years ago it was already converted to LPG when I bought it. It was running all this time on LPG and petrol without any problems. I drove the car in LPG on empty forgetting to switch to over to petrol now when I switch over to gas it starts misfiring and becomes very sluggish especially when I try to accelerate it will not change up very well. The car runs quite normally on petrol but the minute I switch over to gas it starts playing up.

I have just had an MOT done on petrol and the car passed the emissions test without any problems. I have changed the MAF sensor and replaced the 2 coil packs and installed new spark plugs and a new air filter and still no change I would be grateful for any advice you could give me as to what to try next as I am stumped.
Many Thanks For Your Time
Kind Regards

hi there

to me, it sounds like the vaporiser. but first of all, did you close the spark plug gap a bit (0.9mm)?

to mess about with the vaporiser, you need to get all the gas out first. there should be a solenoid next to it with a earth wire. undo this wire and keep it clear of any metal. next run the car and switch on to gas. the engine should stop within a few seconds. do this again to make sure there's no gas left.

undo the allen key bolts to the 2 halves of the vaporiser and gently clean/move the spring and diaphragm.

put it back together and hopefully all will be well again. you may need to get it set up again as the pressure feed might have changed (center bolt). if set wrongly, it's the same as running lean or rich on petrol.

my vaporiser is the 6th photo down.

Hi Scorpio_man

Sorry I will have to leave the work on the vaporiser for an other few weeks.  I have just caught a bad dose of the flew suprising since I had the flew jab.

Many thanks for the advice you gave me will get at it sometime and will let you know how it goes

Hi Scorpio man

Sorry I was not back to you sooner I was not well.  Please could you tell me the name of the software I need to put the gas settings back into my vehicle my vehicle is a Ford Scorpio 1995 2 Litre Automatic 16 valve engine. The LPG system I have in the vehicle is a BI-gas sequential injection system.

I am still having problems with the gas misfiring I have changed the gas injectors and no change I thought it might be that the software settings need to be put in to the vehicle.  I have seen some software for the gas settings on the Internet but but there are so many I don’t know which sort to buy.

Thank you so much for all the help you have gave me in the past

Many Thanks

hi there

i'm not sure what software you need, but i found this company.... http://www.tinleytech.co.uk/acatalog/Software_and_leads.html

if it were me, i'd take to someone who knows about lpg and the system you're using. too many things can go wrong if you don't know what you're doing on the tuning side of things.

Hi scorpio_man
Re my Scorpio 1995

Thank you so much for the helpful web site.  I actually did take it to an lpg converters the very one that installed it in the first place. He was saying it may be the injectors or it may be the emulator and it may be this or that, and and it may need a complete new gas system, but I feel that the problem is not that great.  I quickly realized that he was trying to rip me off.  All it is that, it is misfiring on the third injector that I do know it will probably take very little to put it right

Many thanks for your help if we find out what is it we will let you know

Many Thanks
donal
