Could be a loose or fractured brake disc pad, or the caliper itself may have worked loose. It will stop when you apply the brakes because it will move the pads to the disc stopping the noise.

Either way, you need to get the wheel off and investigate. If it's a braking issue, then you shouldn't risk driving it until you've sorted it out. Before you remove the wheel, spin it to try and locate the reason for the noise.

If the noise is worse when you go over bumps/potholes, your front wishbones may need renewing as the bushes may be u/s.

Obviously don't work on the car without using suitable supports.  ;)

the other option is the droplinks, can cause a clonking noise, when mine went, it clonked when going round corners, at low speeds

thanks everybody, i checked car wheel nuts this morning and the front ones were slightly loose (strange). i tightened them up and knocking has gone ;D ;D ;D.. thankyou.

not that strange lucydog, you should check your nuts on a weekly basis, and within 50miles after a wheel change,

I had a problem once, it turned out to be the retaining spring on the caliper wasn't located correctly at on end, everytime I applied the brakes there was a clunk, it took me ages to find the cause....

iwent to the doctors and he checked them for me, said they are fine not loose and not dangling...lol
