Title: oil leak.
Post by dan_the_man on May 17th, 2007, 1:18pm
hi, just a small oil leak on my old , well used cossie . it looks to drip onto the drive from close to the front of the car on the drivers side. I am planning to take it in for an early mot and get this problem looked at by a proffesional, however I would appreciate suggestions as to the potential cause  ??? thank you.

hi there

could be anything, but i'd think because of the area, power steering fluid.

hard to tell. let us know when it's on the ramp.

Dan, had this on my 2.3 once, it was one of the hoses joining the power steering pump (on the front driver's side of the engine on the 2.3) - would leave a small pool of oil on the driveway if left overnight. New hose clip and retightened it and it was fine after.

Regards, Bruce.

I have the same problem, which could be from several sources. What I did was clean up around the area from above and below using paraffin applied with an old paintbrush and a cloth to wipe up. It also helps to remove the engine underguard tray and clean that up as well. Then after a couple of hundred miles or so check for leaks again using a piece of kitchen paper towel in order to establish what the fluid is  ;D. Examining the underguard might also give you a clue as to fluid and location of leak.

Steering fluid should be pink (same as autobox fluid) and could come from the reservoir or pipes to and from the pump or reservoir.

Brown fluid is more likely to be engine oil and could come from the timing chain front cover or cam cover. Sorting that out (new gasket?) is a lengthy and complicated exercise for either scenario.

I have both problems on my 1998 Cosworth but have long since decided that I can live with the engine oil leak (1 litre per 10,000 miles) and will shortly be replacing the power steering reservoir and all pipework and cooler.

Hope this helps.

Neil W.

the oil leak was from the steering boot ! that was the only thing she required for the MOT . what a lucky boy I am .
