Title: Auto Gearbox problems
Post by Rod on Jun 12th, 2007, 3:21pm
I have a '96 2.9 12 v Scorpio.

Over the last few weeks, I have noticed that when I start off from cold, the gearbox very occasionally takes its time to get into gear.  Blipping the throttle before selecting a gear seems to work.

But it has now started to do this in traffic when I stop in Drive.  Just occasionally, when I go to move off nothing happens until I increase the revs and then it selects a gear with a 'clunk' and I lurch forward.

Checked the gearbox oil level and that is OK.  It is a nice pink with no bits of crud visible.  Having said that - I an going to go for a run and check the oil when it is hot - as per instructions elsewhere on here

The car is going to Garageman on Thursday for its annual 'service' - oil change etc but he does not have the equipment to 'properly' empty the gearbox and torque converter and change the oil.

I gather from someone else that changing the gearbox/torque converter oil might solve the problem - at a cost - although a new or replacement gearbox could be very, very expensive.

Has anyone else suffered this problem - and what was the outcome?

Regards

Rod

Sounds like it could be a sticking solenoid  :-/

I don't know too much about gearboxes, but someone else with more knowledge should be along soon  :)

Thanks for your interest JC.

I am afraid that I know less than you about cars.  ::)

:-[ :-[ I still turn the radio up when I try and use the right indicator.

Hi Rod. Does sound similar to my autobox woes to be honest, does it thump on gearchanges too?

Change of fluid wouldn't hurt it, it's not exactly brain surgery ::). The ones that are hell to fill are the newer type sealed autoboxes, like the later MB and ZF. With them you need scopes to measure fluid temp, precision measurement of the fluid etc etc. But the Scorp isn't that type of box, just a case of dropping the sump and filling it with some Dexron III, do it a couple of times because you can't get all the fluid out in one go :).

Hope this helps.

Regards, Bruce.

Thanks Bruce

It is good to hear that my problem does not appear to be terminal

Unfortunately, your advice was a bit over my head m8

::) ::)  and now for the really numpty questions.

When you say drop the sump, can I assume that the gearbox and torque converter have a separate sump to the engine?

When you say Dexron 111, can I assume that this is a 'flusher' which Grageman will have to pour down the dipper tube?  God help me.  I wish I hadn't started this because everyone will now tease me  :-[ :-[ :-[  No change there then ;D

Thanks in anticipation

:)

hi rod ,start the car put it in r when it goes in r,then into d see how long it takes to change from r to d should be about 1.5 seconds, when its in d put it back in r see how long that takes.if its slow then the servos in the box are worn, gearbox specialist can service it.

Hi ..... I had more or less the same problem and as suggested on this site I changed (at great expense) the auto fluid. But still got the same trouble.
I don't believe in oil additives but in desperation I tried this stuff .... Molyslip MultiGlide Automatic Transmission Treatment ... from a supplier on Ebay. Its been in the car now ('96 2 ltr saloon) for about 4000 miles and the auto gearbox is extremely smooth. No telling how long it will last but I keep my fingers crossed and checking the transmission fluid and still looks good.

Cheers dxt
