Title: Related to cattle grid saga?
Post by mindofitsown on Jun 21st, 2007, 4:17pm
Sorry to ressurect this topic but I've read about the cattle-grid problem with huge interest.
I've had my 2.0L Ultima since Jan 2003 and at that time it only had 40K on the clock. About a month after taking ownership I noticed a strange effect when the auto box reaches top gear and its still there to this day but actually has got better with time (????)!
The effect is not so much a rumble/cattle-grid as described by others on the site but more of a gentle forward-backward jerking as if a gear is selected then de-selected rapidly or almost like misfiring. There is NO noise heard. It happens as soon as top gear comes in all the way until the overdrive comes in at about 47mph. Once overdrive comes in all is OK. If I switch overdrive off then the problem remains until I switch it on. I'm simply not sure if this is the same as experienced by other owners or not.
In summary:
Only happens in the last gear before overdrive comes in.
No noises as such.
Jerkiness is slight and not uncomfortable (still annoying though!).
Symptom is actually less now at 102K miles than at 40K miles and no autobox work has been undertaken in that time.
Makes no difference if in sports mode.
Makes no difference whether acceleration is hard or soft.

Question....does the convertor clutch lock up only happen in top gear? Is the overdrive actually just a top gear and the lock up occur before that? Im not well versed on this gearbox (would prefer a BW35 fitted if i could). If it were a worn seal btween the ATF pump and convertor clutch, wouldn't it have got worse by now?
Appreciate any comments. ta
