Title: Air Con Drivebelt DOHC
Post by Chris_Basel on Aug 7th, 2007, 12:11pm
Has anyone fitted a shorter serpentine belt to a 2.0DOHC model to bypass the air conditioning pulley?

Mine was all working fine until the other day. The air conditioning stopped cooling the air coming into the car and then there was a burning rubber smell under the bonnet. The triangular part on the front of the air conditioning pulley has 3 melted rubber bushes so now the plate rattles on the pulley when the engine is running.

Alternatively, can I buy just the front plate for the pulley or just the rubber parts? The remaining rubber was all dried out and perished. I don't want to spend huge amounts on the car, which was why I was wondering if I could just fit a shorter belt to leave that pulley out. I've unplugged the electrical connector to the pump now as well.

I know there is a shorter belt for models without air conditioning, but the alternator is fitted in place of air conditioning so that type of belt would still be too long.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks.
Chris

Provided the compressor isn't siezed the front plate which is the solenoid clutch that engages the air con compressor can be replaced, I don't know the price but you would be advised to get a good (if there is a good one) air con specialist to have a look.
when mine went, the RAC man tried getting one to bypass the aircon but we had no luck in Tewkesbury however there were some quite near to the size so if you visit a garage or partsdealer they can measure the belt and may be able to match one up temorarily.
But I would recomend you repair it and I would recomend http://www.aircondition.com who supplied my components at a very good price, see my recent posts....

Thanks for your help. I'll take a look at that website.

I don't think it is seized, as I can turn the inner part very easily by hand. I just checked the original belt, 1905mm long, 6 ribs wide.

Hi Chris
You can buy a drive belt for a non air conditioned scorpio from any car spares,  as at the moment i have the same problem as you and thats what i've done to keep it on the road

Perfect, thank you for that answer. I'd just been out and measured across the pulleys and found it is 15cms shorter when you miss out the air conditioning. (Non air con belt is 1750mm long, which is perfect)

I'll go off and buy one from a non airconditioned car then. (It is only chance that the belt is that length though on the non air con model)

Thank you again for confirming that. It'll keep my Scorpio mobile until I get it fixed.
Chris
