Title: Poor cosworth with problems
Post by Scorpio123 on Aug 7th, 2007, 10:17pm
Hi all, I am a new member, but not new to the Scorpio, im on number 5 {still have 3 of them, all 24v}
Wondering if any of you can please help me  ????
I am at the end of my teather with my little project, its a 96 N reg Cosworth, breif history is that I bought it a year ago, great bodywork & interior, but timing chain had snapped, have replaced engine, {new unit is ex-police, also got the brain with engine so have replaced this too} when engine was replaced it struck up on the first turn of the key {I was very pleased, but it was short lived >:(} its failed 5 mots & 3 retests since ! Have now got everything sorted for mot, but it runs terrible. Firstly the fans are on continuosly, have replaced the green relay, twin fans and ECT with spares that I had {relay was new from ford}. But will only work when unplugged from the ECT, when plugged in wont work at all {temp guage in car never goes above half way, whicj im told it needs to before the fans will kick in ?}
Finally other problem is that when you put load onto the engine ie: throttle down anywhere from 10% depressed to all the way, it splutters & judders and feels like a total loss of power, wont accelerate at all, also the revs go erratic as the speed decreases, but if you take your foot off and replace it again its ok for about the first 10% of the pedal pressed again {but at this little amount of throttle you can barely drive it}, then it plays up again.
Sorry to be so long winded, but this saga has stretched over a year now and I am ready to give up & cry ?
If anyone has any ideas then then would be most welcome.
Thanks Simon

Have you had a scan done?
Other than that could it be something omitted or wrongly fitted on the rebuild?
Vaccum pipes?
all seals and gaskets ok round the inlet manifold?
Plug leads in the correct order?

could be a million things though :(

Hi Highlander, Thanks for the reply, have had 4 x diagnostics done, but none could tell me,  but knid guy called Malc off the mailing list lives near me & came to do a proper scan, brought up error codes :
P0118 - ECTS1CH1 / P0138 - OSCHV{B1S2} / P0158 OSCHV{B2S2}
Belive that 1 is for the ECT and the other 2 are for the H02 sensors{lambdas} but I have replaced these previously ? Also scan wouldnt allow full access, not up on what to do with the obd but on the main screen where 3 checks should say yes,yes & yes, it said no,no & no?

hi there

i've just emailed malc the older version of the obd programme.

if it works, he should be able to gather some 'live' data for us to work with.

you need to scan the following...

RPM
MAF
LTFT(s)
BOTH front LAMBDA SENSORS
run these for 5 mins at idle (a/c OFF). every minute, blip the throttle to 2k rpm. end this scan.
then do another scan, switching on and off various temp sensors. also check the tps with the engine off (ignition on). should be from 16% to 92% ish.

try not to drive it on the scan.

oh, check the box with auto re-connect under the GATEWAY, PROTOCOL tabs. that way it should continue to scan even if you need to re-start the engine.

save the scans and send them to me (3 parts).

good luck!

btw, have you disconnected the battery? if not, DON'T! you'll lose lots of info. we can do the battery thing later.

Hi there, Thanks for the info, will have to speak to Malc about another scan being done. I havent disconnected the battery, but at the mo its stored down the road, as I cant use it, and battery may have gone flat, will have to charge it back up again & see.

Thanks Simon
