Title: Rev counter not working ? Post by Scorpio123 on Aug 8th, 2007, 1:19pm Hi all, My red cosworth that ive recently accquired has a couple of problems. 1> The rev counter doesnt work at all, it wont budge from the bottom 2> The speedo does the same , but not all the time, sometimes its ok then all of a sudden it drops to the bottom & stays there, and it may or may not return straight away. 3> There is a noise coming from the rear when driving, its like a humming drone that gets louder the faster you go, is it a wheel bearing ? Or something worse. Thanks Simon |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by petehull on Aug 8th, 2007, 2:21pm Hi Simon, IMO the problem with the speedo and rev counter could be a wiring issue, somewhere on the site I have seen reference to a repair that can be carried out on the instrument cluster, (dry Joints) etc but I'm blowed if I can find it, someone may reveal it's whereabouts soon though. Check the VSS and the CPS as well. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/intbasicelec/vss.pdf The noise at the back sounds like a wheel bearing, see this page for replacement details, htp://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/rhubs.html {} I did mine twice on my last car 'cos I got bearings from a third party supplier and they were faulty so I would recomend getting genuine ford parts. hth Pete |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by jonnycab on Aug 8th, 2007, 2:50pm Regarding the noise at the back, it could also be the diff. When they're worn they tend to make a humming drone that gets louder the faster you go :) |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by Scorpio123 on Aug 8th, 2007, 3:00pm Hi Jonnycab, How can I tell if its the diff or not ? Is there anything I should look for ? Thanks |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by jonnycab on Aug 8th, 2007, 3:53pm The only way I can suggest is to try & work out where the drone is coming from. If it's in the middle of the car, then likely it's the diff. If it's more to the left or right, then likely a bearing. But in my experience wheel bearings tend to squeak & squeal more than drone when they're on their way out. You could also check to see if the diff is leaking any oil, or if it's low on oil then give it a top up. It may quieten it down :) |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by Highlander on Aug 8th, 2007, 4:05pm I'd take a look at the cv joints and the prop centre bearing ;D |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by Sewingkit on Aug 8th, 2007, 6:10pm Hi I just had the same thing with my speedo, twas the VSS! £70 from ford mind you but at least it will last (longer than the car I would think!) Steve |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by mr._floppy on Aug 8th, 2007, 6:12pm If the sound is the same whether on overrun ( when you take your foot off the gas pedal ) or booting it, then I'd discount the diff. They tend to be very robust on the Scorp, diff problems are few and far between on this board, they go on forever . My Crown Vic Forum reccommends changing the Diff oil every 30k miles !!! :o aye, that will be right , a money making exercise for FMD's more like. |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by Scorpio123 on Aug 8th, 2007, 7:50pm Forgot to ask, would the VSS also be responsible for the rev counter or just the speedo ? |
||
Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by Highlander on Aug 8th, 2007, 8:19pm just the speedo |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by Scorpio123 on Aug 8th, 2007, 9:22pm Ok thanks, will have to remove instrument panel & see if that sheds anymore light on as to why the rev counter isnt working. Cheers |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by petehull on Aug 8th, 2007, 10:25pm I believe the rev counter is fed from the Crank Position Sensor via the ECU.... Could be a wiggle the wire type of job, especially after all the rain we've had hth Pete |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by Simmo on Aug 9th, 2007, 7:14am I think THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/coolanttempgauge.htm) is what Pete was trying to find. It relates to another issue but may help IF you take the cluster out. Personally I'd try the 'wiring wiggle' route first. ;) |

Title: Re: Rev counter not working ? Post by Scorpio123 on Aug 9th, 2007, 9:52am Thanks Simmo, will go for the easier wiggle option first, but if no joy then will try the more complicated option. Thanks |
