Title: Loss of No 4 gear in Cossie Granny - yes, I know.. Post by pappa on Aug 16th, 2007, 8:40pm Sorry about the offtopic Granny question, but I have already checked on the Granny Online with this one... I suddenly lost the 4th gear from my -93 Cossie Granny A4LD box. It has done that earlier every now in the past and then but has worked like charm for many months until now. Oils are red and smell good. The Granny-Online suggests that it is the sensor (VSS) that is causing this nine times out of ten. My box also has been "whining" like Turbo for over 30.000 km that I've had it. So what's ya guys/gals reckon, is the sensor to your experience or do I have an Auto to Manual search and install project ahead? I'll give the sensor a shot, it's easy, but ideas are welcomed. Btw. Granny can only do around 190km/h with three gears. :-/ |

I did have four of them and two failed that way..... |

I'm in Finland Martin, maybe we skip the box from you :) It weights over 70kg, would probably cost about the same as if I imported one whole car from Germany. Thank you for your concern, I agree on the noise and doom. |

Yesterday I changed the VSS and noticed slight improvement in the gearshift, but there's still no 4th gear. ( I may be imagining too :) ). The VSS was not turning smoothly, so there was something wrong with it anyway. I can acquire a known good for 70 euros, I think I might go for it. Another known fault is the solenoid that takes care of the turbine lock on 3rd and o/d on 4th. That's what I've been told, but it could be that the whole box is shot as well. |

Title: Re: Loss of No 4 gear in Cossie Granny - yes, I kn Post by pappa on Aug 20th, 2007, 9:52am hi jonnycab, Yes Granny has a MAF too, but it's got an A4LD autobox, which is more "mechanical" than electric and it should not affect to gearchanges in this case at all. Well to my less than perfect knowledge, it think it's like this. (I also know that my MAF's clean, I'm running a heard of Scorpios here ;D ) I went to town this morning to pick up a working A4LD box from a guy I know. I'll make a swap and then recondition this one. Thanks for your help guys! |

Title: Re: Loss of No 4 gear in Cossie Granny - yes, I kn Post by pappa on Sep 6th, 2007, 12:27pm If anyone's still interested in this one, I've found out that there is actually two solenoids in the 24V Granny box. One that controls the Convertor Clutch and one that controls the 3/4 Shift. found this from the "Ford Vehicle System Test manul and Electrical diagrams" manual. I checked my vacuuming today. Yes indeed, one vacuum hose was disconnected and connecting it made the gearchange sweet as pie, but did not bring back the converter lock or the 4th gear. Next thing to try out is to find out if the solenoids click when current is applied to them. They seem to "share" one lead (I'm not sure of it, haven't been able to crawl under the car yet) according to diagram, it is now my main suspect. I may just be totally off the track here, but life is a learning process. So if nothing else comes out this quest, there will be knowledge - which I will share of course. |

Title: Re: Loss of No 4 gear in Cossie Granny - yes, I kn Post by pappa on Dec 27th, 2007, 1:48pm :( Had to give up. >:( During the Christmas holidays I swapped the Grannys gearbox into another one and that sorted my gearchange problems until next time. The old box started being quite funny when the temp dropped below zero. If it stood still for a few days it took at least 10 min drive before it would engage the third gear. ;D Funny box. Well, got another one from Germany. Along came another Cossie Granny which I slaughtered and spilled it's guts all over Finland. ( read: broke and sold its parts around Finland ) I still have the old limping box, would like to open it up and see what's got into it. I happened to buy a A4LD manual a while back. Good problem sorting guides and all. All I need is time... :'( |

That turned out to be a pipe which had come astray and was stopping the top gear being selected.... I had the car for many years after he died and it was always a perfect changer after that! Title: Re: Loss of No 4 gear in Cossie Granny - yes, I kn Post by blue2 on Dec 27th, 2007, 3:45pm I have a similar problem with my 12valve Granada 1992 Vintage A4LDe (also have a 1995 Cossie) I seem to have a built in Legal Speed limiter as it drops out of 4th at around 75MPH gradually the speed at which this happens has got lower. I supected a vacuum leak but can't find one (vac guage reads about what I would expect) I gues I will have to try changing the modulator valve on the gearbox but I have only had one fail before wher it leaked internally and burned ATF. Anyone had similar problems on a Granada or 12V Scorpio ? |

I had my box quoted by a guy who has been building and repairing Ford's over 20 years. He has done some investigating on the A4LD's and described one symptom just like yours being caused by a leaking valve body gasket. But he is not into autoboxes, he's opinion for me was to change it, don't fix it. ;D He's got a 2.0 Sierra with 527 bhp (last time we talked about it) |
