Title: coil packs
Post by ferretmobile on Aug 22nd, 2007, 8:43pm
Hi guys, my 2.3 is consuming coil packs. During the last two years it has got through at least four. These things are not cheap. If I order them from FPUK they are about £75 But if I am unable to wait and order from my local ford dealership, who can have them for me by lunch time the following day, they are £93 each...ouch!
I dont understand why I am suffering from this problem.
I have this week replaced a pack and to be fair the H.T. leads (long and short) were very old, so I replaced these as well. I checked over the low tension wires to the packs and they diddnt look to bad. The l.T. wires continue into the cam sensor and the insulation here was a bit suspect, so I wrapped black insulating tape around this part to keep the damp out and to stop the insulation from degrading any more.
When I had completed all of the above inc replacing the dodgy coil pack, I turned the engine over and to my relief she roard into life. Much tea and ciggys later, I put the lid on with the ten 10mm bolts and took it for a spin.
So far she has been perfect but I am at a loss as to why she is consuming so many coil packs.
Do any of you pundits here have the same problem with the 2.3? I would be very interested to know.
cheers ferret

They're not overheating are they?

Hi Ferret......Wow, coils packs have gone up a bit at FMD since I last bought them...£65 each about 4 years ago....Ford really must be in trouble  ::)

There was a company on Ebay that sold them for £35, but can't remember the name....will need some hunting down.

Are the FPUK coil packs the same as the FMD ones ?....if they're pattern parts, then they may not be made to the same standard. FMD ones are made in Slovenia (where ?  ???)

It could have also been the old HT leads doing the damage as well. Hopefully they'll be okay now that you've got new HT leads  :)

If it's due to overheating, then maybe the plugs are shot. If not, you could do what I did....bought a spare cover & drilled holes in it to let the heat out......I now have two 2.3 engine covers, one for summer & one for winter  ;D

Hi guys, thank you for the replies. I wouldnt know if the coil packs were overheating, is this a common occourence on the 2.3? As they are sitting on top of what is I suppose a huge heat exchanger one would suppose that the packs were fairly heat proof.........silly me!
I have changed the plugs and do so about twice a year. But I have noticed an orange corona on the plugs recently which would indicate more than normal heat exchange but prehaps that was due to the dodgy leads.
J.C., an interesting solution to the heat dissipation problem Re drilling holes in the summer cover. Did you have the same problem as here?
I hope that I have cured the problem this time cos these parts aint cheap.
If it goes belly up again ...........nah, dont go there.

Hi Ferret, no I didn't have the same problem as you. I just thought it might help in prolonging the life of the loom & stop it from cracking up  ;)

Ahhh I see. Funny thing is, my LT wiring has been pre-wrapped in black plastic leccy tape, unlike some of the typical scorp wiring that has a cloth style wrapping that likes to come adrift, for example the wiring in the boot.
The only bit of LT wiring that wasent plastic wired was to the cam shaft sensor. And you know where that is J.C.
What were the wire colours, I seem to recall  hmm, that they may have been pink, pink and oh yeh...pink
Sorry J.C. couldent resist it.

What about lifting the top cover off altogether?
should be ok unless you pressure wash your engine (like me)  ;D

Would that be OK? Presumably in the Summer months (what summer) this would be no problem. Any of you other lads and lassies out there run your 2.3 dohc units this way??
Highlander, do you have a 2.3 sans lid? or does bonnie scotland have other wee pressing problems................................................................................................like only getting andy stewart on the radio.
Only pulling yer dirk Highlander!!
Now that Moira Stewart...........................

Can't wait to see your response to this one Stuart. Not a mention of Sidney (tiny bubbles) Devine. Go get him.

The loom should be pre-wrapped in black armoured plastic shielding & not leccy tape.....could it have been repaired before ?  :)

As for the pink wiring to the cam shaft sensor......I pink you're wrong & I pink you're being sarcarstic.....

......Ooh I do hate sarcarsm.... ;D

Jusst a thought, but are you certain that you are using the correct spark plugs?

oooo yessum. I have tried NGKs Bosh and Motorcraft.
I compare like with like before replacing and often consult the good book on plug size before I buy, which is about twice a year cos of my daily high millage :D
So it aint the plugs.
Incedently the beast is going well at the moment.......except for an odd donk sort of noise. Here we go again. But the memsahib has promised that if I make a start on the front room, she wont mind if I give the scorp to local spanner wielding robber for fettling and a-fixing.
Looks like me fishing on Sunday is out of the window. ::)

LOL!

Anyway, I found that Ford changed the recommended plug from first issue, at least that's what my FMD said. It aint the brand that matters, its the type ;)

Try night fishing, it offers a suitable method of conducting an affair at a later date or a good excuse for a piss up in the dark with hardly any one else knowing ;)

OMG! fumbling in the dark...............I did this many many moons ago, gettin to old for that sort of malarky.
I prefer to be tucked up with the memsahib, with a stomper of a curry and then early to bed to dream of giant carp........
I tried night fishing a few times but I drank far too much to keep out the cold and fell off my seat and ...nah its a story that I only reveal if plied with strong drink.
Oh dear, this does have a rather alcoholic thread running amock, so its not all bad then.
Could be that I am an ex-navy rating and the worship of bacchus is second nature or maybe a case of scorpiosis liquidus blotus mindus!

Thought I'd try a bit of salmon fishing a while back......thought it might be quite relaxing  :)

......until someone told me that I might catch a 'pink' salmon.......I snapped my rod in half & threw it in the river  >:(

Oh....& I don't eat prawns anymore either, I find it too stressful  :(......... ;D

Cant go fishing this weekend :(...far to much to do, new term at college and have to sort out schemes of work for the new student intake. Or as we refer to them as "gremlins, the new batch" }{
Also got to find the source of this new "donk"on the motah. Incedently the EDIS system has been faultless since I fettled it, so I think that the HT leads were to blame.
If she dosent play up any more ::) my next major job is to sort out the rear arches and rust spots on sills. But I think that I will have this work done by a professional.
I know my limitations ;)
