Title: Erm....it's started pinking again
Post by jonnycab on Aug 25th, 2007, 9:26pm
It's been fine for 3 months, since I replaced the camshaft sensor, but it's doing it again  ???

Started a couple of weeks ago, only a short rattle when dipping the accelerator, just before it drops down a gear.

So it's pinking under load...but as before, it doesn't do it all the time, just occasionally  ???

I checked the plugs today & all are fine apart from No4 plug which is obviously overheating, as it was starting to get a dark glaze on it.

I think I'd be right in thinking that this is caused by the pinking, but why just this plug & not the others ?....would there be a big carbon build up in this cylinder ? & if so, why just No4 & not the other three ?....Hmmm :-/

I might add that if I use BP etc 97 Ron, then there is no pinking at all. But this stuff is just too expensive to use all the time  ::)

Sounds to me as though you might have an air leak on No. 4  which could weaken it and cause overheating and pinking.

I was maybe thinking that, but where would the leak be ?

The plugs are nice & tight, & the inlet & exhaust manifolds both have new gaskets  :-/

Hi JC
Try this - take out No. 4 plug, take of the dark glaze with a small file, check the gap and switch it with the No.2.
Run the car for a couple of days and see if plug 2 (now in 4) has started to glaze and the rest are still OK.

Not very au fait with fuel injection systems but by the injector perhaps?
Head gasket?
Was it OK after you fitted the new gaskets and then developed again? If so, presumably you've re-checked the bolts. Again, if that is the case,  could you have a warped inlet manifold? In my trade days (long ago!) a good coat of gasket cement usually did the trick but not sure whether that's still an option  with more modern engines.
