Title: strange air con problem
Post by scorpio197 on Sep 7th, 2007, 10:26pm
hello folks ,this is a strange one and it could only happen to my car .After the air con has been on for about thirty minutes or so the front end of the car makes a squeeking noise every time I hit a bump or turn a corner ,sounds like all the shocks and springs have gone dry ? Turn the air con off ,with in a few minutes every thing goes back to normal . I dont have any air con faults that I know of it works very well ,its driving me nuts ...Any ideas ,or does anyone else have this problem?  thanks in advance for any help ...david

Try loosening or removing the drive belt & check all the pulley wheels for any stiffness.

They should all turn freely...if any resistance is felt then this may be causing the squeeking.

I'd consider the power steering pump bearings if it's doing it when turning  ;)

Could be the drivebelt tensioner, when aircon is switched on more pressure is applied to the tentioner and if the bearing is a bit dry could be causing the squeek, I have a similar problem but haven't had the chance to investigate yet..... Very busy at the moment... :-X plus, I have a high pitch hearing loss so I can't hear it inside the car..... My wife can though ::)

You sure its not the fan? My fan squeaks when braking or turning (left or right, can't remember right now).

Could also be the clutch on the air con compressor, try squirting it with wd40. john.n

the noise seems to be from the springs or shocks area ,more pronounced when going up and down ,if it was the drive belt would it not make the noise all the time ,I cant see why it would make a differance just because the air con is on ?could it be the air con unit is freezing up and ice/cold air is cooling down rubber bushes or mounts and making them squeak? As I said  (it could only happen to my car )

Worn anti-roll bar bushes can squeek when going around corners & bouncing up & down.....I wouldn't have thought it would be affected by the air-con being on though  :)

My car makes the same noise. And it is definitely coming from suspension / bushes.

My theory is that the condensation water from A/C is the culprit. Somehow it must find it's way to the bottom arm area.

I haven't spent any time on investigating this as the noise appears only on very warm and humid days. And I live in Finland, not in England:) I think that I heard the noise four or five times this summer.

If it's not the anti-roll bar bushes then it's probably the wishbone bushes that are sqeeking, which means they may be worn & require replacing.

The rear bush can be replaced separately, but the front bush cant be replaced, so it might be looking like new wishbone time  :)
