My 96 diesel is eating battery power, battery is ok, tried a new one but its discharging overnight.

Glove box light is disconnected, so i'm looking at alternator and power saving relay. anyone had anything else cause this?

Hi Stuart

I assume when you say overnight you are talking about say 7.00 pm to 7.00am. What happens to the starting power if you disconnect the battery during that time. It may not be a drain it may be that 12 hours is now more than the battery can now store.

Incidently (now back off holiday and catching up) what does "Alastair is going to get " A LOAD OF 2.3 SPARES " mean.

if the battery is disconnected then theres no problem, somethings sooking the joose oot it! ;D

Hi Stuart

Just had the same fault, had an auto electrician look at it and it turned out to be the battery side fuse box. Replaced it and all ok now.

will have a look at that, anything in particular wrong with it or did you just replace the whole thing?

Hi Stewart

I replace the whole thing because I had a spare.The r16 power saver relay was engaging when the doors were opemed, and stayed on once the doors were closed and the int lights had gone out.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, there's a diode in the harness under the battery side fuse box, anyone know what it does & what would happen if it goes wrong?
(just wondered if it could cause a drain)
Blue/black connects to blue/orange plug 10 on the fusebox.

The idea is that it should remove the supply to the glove box, interior lights etc. around twenty minutes after the last time anything was disturbed on the car - such as a door being opened or closed. Idea is that even if you forget and leave something on, it will not stay on for long.
