Title: Troubles with my Cossie
Post by drawlings on Sep 10th, 2007, 9:14am
Hi All

My problem developed on Friday, the car seemed to be running fine as normal but after about half hour of driving the temp seems to suddenly drop to cold then rise to normal again and this goes on for a few mins. It will return to normal for a little while then it will start moving up and down again.

Any ideas, I have checked the water levels (no problems), also checked to see if the MAF sensor was dirty. My next idea would be to change the thermostat, but dont want to spend money and time if this is not the problem.

Cheers

Dan

Could be a faulty temp guage sender  :)

If it were the thermostat then the temp would tend to drop when on a fast run & return to normal when driving around town  :)

Cheers johnny, do you know where I can find the temp gauge sender.

Sorry, can't help you on that front, I'm just a lowly 2.3 owner  ::)...... ;D

This may help.....

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/24vcomponents.htm

It may be next to the ECT sensor (round multiplug) & should have a squarish multiplug.....it is on the 2.3 anyway  ;)

Here it is Dan, diagram 11

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/engines/24v/24VDismantle.pdf

I've had two do the exact same thing, gauge dropping to zero then back up to half way every now and again, no problems with thermostat or cooling system, its the sender unit or the wiring..

Cheers Highlander, do you know how much the sensor costs?

I had a similar problem and the cause was the small sender with 1 wire going to it, located just near the larger one with 2 wires going to it.

The sender had been knocked during some work and was physically broken.

Try moving the sender to check for play with the electrics on, see if the guage moves.

The smaller one is about £4 and is IIRC fairly standard across the Granada/Scorpio/Sierra range.

Thanks Dave, Will have a look tonight to see if there is any lose wires. The road I use to get home is very bumpy and could be what has cause it.

Or just old age (the car that is, not you) ;)

Hi there!

You can rule out the wiring problem and the possible instrument panel temp cauge malfunction
like this:

-Take out the lead that goes into the sensor
-put a short lead into the sensor plug and ground it
-Turn on the ignition

The temp needle should go all the way to red = wiring and instrument
panel are -OK- buy and install new temp sender. They're known
to go bad when they grow older :)

I Have changed sensors into the Granny and into the Froggy Cossie.
In the Granny the needle sstops reaching the normal level and
stays down or may even stop moving at all.

Cheers puppa, I am planning to buy a replacment sensor anyway, do you have to ford part number for the sensor as from experience with fords they tend to get most items wrong from their supplier, or maybe that just was the place I use to get my scorpio bits from.

Cheers

Right I have replaced the temp sender (could only get the part from unipart as fords no longer produce that part).

While down there I was checking the ECT Sensor and noticed that plug itself was broken, and casing around the wires has gone while the 2 wires are wrapped around each other.

My now seems to be, after about 15 secs after I have started the car, its fans come on and stay on even while the engine is warming up.

Any ideas

Cheers

Dan

if the a/c is on, then this is fine for the fans to be on slow mode. they will cycle on and off with the compressor.

hi there

sound like you still have a small wiring issue still. :-/

have you looked under the front x panel where the loom goes to the other side of the engine bay?

To be honest none of the wiring looks that great. But I will check it now.

The wiring looks ok for its age but could do with re-casing

You asked for part numbers and prices; I have had no problem getting the following for my 1998 Cosworth this year from either Ford Parts UK or my local main dealer.

Temp sender (to gauge)  FINIS 7171007  £6.50
Temp sensor (2 wires)     FINIS 6810428  £15.00
Thermostat (connector)   FINIS 7334678  £39.54
Fans relay (green)           FINIS  1030495  £36.80

The temperature sensor and sender are both at the front of the engine under the "Cosworth" cover and in the centre of the "Vee".

You might need some or all of these parts to solve your problem, apart from any other diagnosis someone on this forum comes up with.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Neil for that infomation.

I know have a even bigger problem.  Today I only changed the temp sender. I have the ECT sensor but I dont have a socket big enough to change it. I did take off the connector which has seen better days (cable tied on).

Anyway, after I changed the temp sender, i started the car. It ran fine for about half hour, so I switched off. Came back half hour later as I was going out for the day and it started but did not feel right, put the car in reverse it then just died. Started it again the car would barely move without jumping around. Finally got it moving and I could not it over 2mph. I also noticed what looked like oil coming from exhaust.

Please any ideas and its driving me nuts

cheers

Dan

Oh dear! Have you tried looking at the diagnostics on this site. Try http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm

Oil from the exhaust sounds like a head gasket  or piston rings :-/

check the oil and water levels and have a look for signs of one in the other

Cheers Highlander, I dont think its the head gasket yet. The car was fine until I changed the temp sender. I am going to put the old sender back in today and see if it has fixed my problem

cheers

I am now getting annoyed, the cossie wont even start.

oil levels are ok and water is fine. But I did notice that the temp guage is now set at full

If the ECT Sensor is pretty knacked, could this cause the problems I am having?

by oil, did you mean white smoke or actual oil? my cossie started running rubbish and lots of white smoke, was a spark plug blown.

sounds like some wiring has been disturbed whilst in and around the engine, maybe lost spark somewhere?

hth,

No there was no smoke, when running it sound like it was choaking rather than running smooth.

I keep checking the wiring but nothing is differnent from before

Was there oil dripping out the exhaust or blue smoke??

Title: Re: Troubles with my Cossie

The was no obvious smoke other than exhaust fumes. The oil was a tiny amount

Ok a update.

I have got the car started, I have done a bit a bodge job on the wires by the temp sender and managed to get the car started. Looking at the rest of the wiring I think its going to be one of days where I am going to have to strip and re-cover the loom  becuase the car will idle ok but the second I try to drive it, it will splutter and then stall.

Where is the best place to get the repair material for the wiring? i.e. heat protector casing and wire insulation tape?

Cheers

Dan

Sorry, I haven't read this post for a while & not sure if you sorted this  :)

Going back to the fans coming on after 15 seconds...this is most likely due to the ECT. If the ECT wires are disconnected from the ECT (plug pulled off or broken wire) then the fans will run at full speed regardless  :)

Sorry Johnny I forgot to mention in the last post, where I bodged the wiring temperaly with standard insulation tape, it seemed to fix my problem.

But from the way the car is running I know there is something else wrong with the wiring. I will try and take a pic and post on here

Sounds like a similar problem to one I had a couple of years ago. I took the inlet manifolds off, managed to wrap each wire individually as neccessary (with insulation tape) as it was badly cracked in some places.

What was actually stopping the car running was the 2 wires that go to the crank sensor (at the bottom of the engine) were touching as the insulation had gone. I reinsulated these and the car fired up.

In your case I would also pay attention to the 4 wires that go to the plug that plugs into the coil pack (DIS).

Cheers  :)
