Title: Cruise control problem
Post by Scorpio_Mike on Sep 12th, 2007, 10:07am
Noticed the other day when switching the ignition on that the cruise control light didn't come on - and guess what ? It doesn't engage either. D'oh ! :(
I don't use it much but would like to have it working. Also noticed that the 'Trailer direction indicator warning light' does not light up when switching the ignition on.
All other warning lights seem OK - traction control,  O/D etc...
Any ideas where to start checking fuses etc ? I found a green relay up inside the glovebox which I think is for the CC but I'm more inclined to suspect a fuse.

Appreciate any help !
Thanks.

OK, done a liitle investigation this morning - when you switch on the ignition, the O/D / Trailer / Cruise warning lights DO NOT show !
O/D engages / disengages OK with the switch on the auto shifter but cannot get the CC to work.
I found a blue/white wire loose which looks like it should go to the indicator switch but has been pulled out from the multi-plug connector and the contacts poked into the insulation on the wiring loom - think this must be something to do with the towbar electrics which were installed recently - pretty sure everything was working fine afterwards.
Have checked fuses and not found any blown.
Any ideas ?

hi there

iirc, the cruise control light only comes on when activated (speed set using +or -).

have you checked all fuses? is the horn working?

Hi,
Horn works OK
I'm sure all the warning lights should show when you first switch the ignition on and then they go out after a few seconds ?

The O/D & cruise control lights don't come on when the ignition is switched on...well they don't on mine  :)

Regarding the cruise control not working.....have you checked that the plunger is fully extended on the switch that rests against the brake pedal, it may have been pushed in  :)

The other simple check is make sure that the cable is still attached to the throttle linkage from the motor which is behind the offside headlamp. It is only held by a small plastic 'banjo' and can become detached.

Well, strange thing happened with my CC yesterday - it actually engaged when I pressed the '+' button ! The light on the dash came on and I could definately feel it working.
Other buttons have no effect ( at least I don't think so ? ).
I'm guessing it is a problem with the switch contacts in the steering wheel but am a bit concerned about taking it apart because of the airbag.
Is this a tricky and or expensive thing to fix ?
Anyone got the bits going spare ?

Mike. It sounds as though the switch contacts could be the problem. There are details on the site as to how to remove the airbag safely from the steering wheel and no doubt that would allow you to access the relevant switches in the first instance.  :) Have a read of THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/interior/airbags/abdriver.pdf).

Safe removal of airbags in short:

- Remove the battery
- Wait AT LEAST 15 MIN (I've waited half an hour)
- Go for it, detach the airbag (two torxes behind the steering wheel, turn the wheel 45 degrees
to get to them) Very small holes.
- Always handle the airbag like it's going to blow any second when you carry it, extend it
as far from you as you can.
- DO NOT measure the continuity or resistance of the airbag! It may blow.

I have succesfully disconnected and connected  them a few times, touching the wood here!
Oh... DO NOT CONNECT the battery before the airbag is properly connected, otherwise
you may just forget and connect it to live wiring

:)

p.s. I had the same problem in -97 24V, the CC worked and the light lit when you turned it on. All the switches seemed to work as well, but the light never came on even though I turned on the CC from it's switch. Only when
I set the speed. I just added that to the "One of the mysterious phenomenans of the beast"

" If it works, don't touch it! "
