Title: Scorpio diesel
Post by Al_Sithi on Sep 14th, 2007, 11:31am
Hi
Does anyone know if the Rover version of the VM 2.5 diesel will fit a Scorpio?

Thanks
John

I would doubt they are a straight swap but the basic engine is the same.

I had a look at a Jeep cherokee with the 2.5 VM and its the same block and heads but everything else is different, alternators, pumps etc

Thanks for the quick reply!

I live in Spain and have been looking for a diesel to bring over here and change to Spanish plates. Yesterday I found one over here which has already been imported and is even LHD!

Only problem is it has an overheated engine and my local mechanic (who knows the car) reckons it would be cheaper to fit a replacement as it's 'in a bad way'.

I can buy the car for 400 euros, which is less than the cost to transfer a UK car to Spanish plates anyway, and I can get a good Rover engine for free off my dad in England.

Very, very tempting....

So you'll use the Rover block and add the Scorpio parts you already have? Sounds interesting, would be interested to hear how you get on if you go ahead with it

Well, the car will effectively cost me nothing, as it would cost more than 400 euros to change a UK car to Spanish plates.

The engine boiled over 2 days after the car passed it's ITV, so I know in very other respect the vehicle is sound. It doesn't need testing again until 2009, so basically all the car will cost me is the price of fixing the engine.

My dad has done some research and given me the bad news- the rover engine won't fit. Apparently the bolt holes for the ancillaries don't line up.....bummer!

Only thing left is to either source a new engine from a Scorpio or get my dad to fly over with just the heads in his suitcase.

Or forget the whole thing!

Rover engine block *should* fit, but on the 800 it's mounted transversely so the ancillaries will all be in different positions and you'll need to swap the manifolds and all brackets..

Also the Rover 800 application had full EDC control (like the later Scorpio applications), so if the original was an early type without this then there's a fair bit of wiring and sensors and stuff to add - which would probably make it more trouble than it's worth.

There's a 1995 car on Ebay for a quid with an MOT until Jan. Any reason why I couldn't take this car to Spain then swap engines? This one appears to have no aircon- will the later compressor bolt on?
