Title: Engine management system
Post by Wadman on Sep 16th, 2007, 3:21pm
Left Milton Keynes to drive to Southampton for a cruise, and at Oxford, some 25mls of the journey, my engine just died. Eventually, the RAC got us there and a Ford garage was asked to fix it while we were away. The car was repaired and has been OK since.
My problem is the description of the work carried out by the garage on the bill of £42.

I quote exactly as written;  "car cutting out & non start carry out ids engine checks- no dtc logged reset kam retest ids-tests ok"

Anyone know what all this means?

I will hazard a guess having been through a similiar situation.
your "ids" is actually EDIS ( electronic distributorless ignition system) and "kam" is actually camshaft sensor - wiring from camshaft sensor to ECU.

If it is fixed for £42 you were lucky. Hope it lasts

Cheers for info.
My concern now is,  if they confused IDS with EDIS, that the mechanics are more knowledgable than the person who created the invoice.

the KAM or Keep Alive Memory (KAM) retains the DTCs or fault codes so they can be accessed via the tool that the garages used.

So this was checked, no dtc found so reset. Any faults would usually return after the drive cycle. As for IDS, I too would go for EDIS.

As far as I can make out, all they've done is check for trouble codes, of which none were found.

So what did they do to get the car running again ?

Or have I missed something here ?  :-/

Looking at that, the've not done anything to get the engine going again and just checked for troble codes and cleared it down.

Prob a fluke that it started again at the Ford place.

If I were to hazard a guess - blocked fuel filter - left overnight the blockage has shifted/dissolved/broken up and it's let your engine start again.  When was your fuel filter last changed?

Or a slightly dodgy fuel pump relay  ;)

Yes it does and because of what we went through with the EDIS and moving wires amd thinking we had solved the problem, I still think this is electrical.

Wadman if the problems return come back on and we can make some suggestions for your auto electrician to check on your car

Gentlemen I thank you all. You have all given me food for thought.

At this time, and I am hoping these words don't come back to haunt me, the car runs OK.
