Title: Fuel Flap Lock Solenoid
Post by macw on Sep 26th, 2007, 4:05pm
When it is warm the fuel flap solenoid keep buzing in and out at rapidly every second.
(For information- The alternator is a little low 13.6V, but it has a new high capacity battery I am charging up regularly until I get a new Alternator.)
Any ideas as to the cause and a quick fix which doesn't mean dismantling the inside of the boot? I am not worried about it not being locked.

Hi,

I had this with first experiences with a particular Scorpio (24v Ultima). Slightly different, sometimes when unlocking, the fuel flap lock motor would, as with yourself, repeatedly pump lock then unlock. In my case, I would simply immediately lock the vehicle again, wait a few seconds, unlock and repeat (i.e. check if motor is going crazy again or not). Usually within 2 or 3 goes it would have stopped.

Note: You may find that as I did (as the problem appears to have fairly rapidly completely sorted itself out now [i.e. I appear to no longer ever have this problem]... after my programatic response to its mis-behaviour it appears to have given up the fight! ;) lol), toggling between a normal lock and unlock with a full global lock and deadlock (2nd locking), it seems to straighten out some confusion in the logic of the system (or whatever causes this). I.e. try deadlocking, global opening and global closing (the 1st locking and 2nd locking switching seems to be what really sorts this out).

Hope that makes a little sense and helps. As in your case, the issue appears to be related to "temperature" (presumably of the engine?), you may have a different issue but it does appear to be tied in to the deadlocking (2nd locking) vs. normal locking (1st locking) system(s). Equally, I would do the usual careful checking of the battery cover being in place, and that the drain holes of the main and auxilliary fuse and relay bays are clear.

Best wishes,

P.s. Please let us know how you get on (generally as well as with any of the above :) ).

P.p.s. On first inspection of the vehicle in my case, I inspected and cleared the fuse and relay areas (it was not particularly dirty, blocked or bad - so not a factor I would hazard in my case - but none the less good practise - and it is certainly now clearer or better than it was - again though, in my case in the first place it was not "bad" in any event [the fuse and relay bays and their general amount of damp or crap and drain hole condition).

P.p.p.s. Should also have mentioned, as I recall, it did once suddenly start to do this (repeatedly lock and unlock the fuel flap) shortly after setting off (a good few minutes or so) (I am pretty sure it wasn't doing it immediately after first unlocking as per normal and that I suddenly heard something / noticed it when underway - hence I am pretty sure that on this one or possibly two occasions it did actually do it after setting off rather than immediately on unlocking - however the norm was almost always, virtually entirely, for it to do this immediately on unlocking) - hence this (the fact that at least once or twice it did occur after getting underway) may add some weight to the notion that playing with the 2nd locking / deadlocking vs. 1st locking / normal locking may help alleviate your problem, reset it, get it / train it to behave, etc. :)
