Title: Missing when I accelerate
Post by ChrisF on Oct 8th, 2007, 3:40pm
I have a problem, it is an anoying 'missing' when I accelerate I've tried changing the 2 cheaper plug leads but until i know definiatley I'm a bit reluctant to spend £140+ on the other two. It shows itself when I'm accelerating, some times giving a back fire, which makes me feel it is leeds in some way . . . . . . . . anybody help . . . . . . . please

Sounds like it could be a problem with the coil packs  :)

You can get those there as well , at what I think is a reasonable price

Oh well I suppose I'd better persuade the misses that we need more than wet string to make the plugs work   coil packs it will be

Sorry Snoopy it is a 16v 2.3    thanks for the info   considering the occaitional backfire (its happened about 3 times in about 500 miles) does your instinct point to the coils or anything else   Thanks

Check the wiring to the coil packs, it is prone to damage from heat and old age ,  but I am sure others with the 2.3 will be along to help more.
Have you read the article HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/dohcloom.htm)

Just re-read your original post about the backfire  :)

Is it an engine backfire?....if so, engine backfire is usually associated with an air leak in the inlet manifold, causing the engine to run lean  :)

Have you had the car for long ?....if not, do you know if the inlet manifold has been replaced prior to you buying it ?

The reason I'm asking is because the 2.3 is renowned for having it's inlet manifold replaced, due to it splitting on the thermostat housing, & new gaskets aren't always used  ???

If you've had the car for a while & it's only just started misfiring, with the occasional engine backfire, then I'd start by checking the coil packs.
There is no real way of testing them without some very expensive gear, but a visual check for cracks on the main body & multiplug connections may be an indication that it's time for a change of coils  ;)

Also check the wiring to the coils for heat damage which causes the wire insulation to go brittle & crumble off, exposing the bare wire  :)

Hope this helps  :)

As an update to the problem I decided to take the cover off the plugs and have a look at the coil pack's.  I only had time to check one so I checked the no 2, took it out, checked it, found a lot of oil but it looked ok, put it all back and what do you know, it all goes ok, .......... why.......what

The car probably went into self repair mode, they do that from time to time  ;)..... ;D

Seriously though...oil on the plugs or coil would cause a weak spark & cause it to misfire & maybe the odd backfire.

Where did the oil come from though ?.... maybe a leaky rocker cover gasket ?  :)
