Title: Another wishbone problem
Post by jonnycab on Oct 17th, 2007, 1:49am
The rear part of the wishbone that the rear bush slips over is obviously screwed into the end of the cast wishbone body.

There is a soft metal stud that goes through the wishbone into this add-on end part, obviously to stop it unscrewing.

I've drilled out the stud & tried with all my might (maybe I'm not mighty enough  ::)) to unscrew the end part, but it just won't budge  ???

Has anyone ever got this part of the wishbone out before & if so, what steroids did you use ?  ;D

The reason I'm trying to separate the two parts is because about a year ago I replaced both wishbones.
A few months later I had a problem with road holding & thought it might have been a prematurely failing bush.
I removed the wishbones to inspect the bushes properly, but they were fine.

On putting the wishbones back I accidentally over tightened the N/S rear bush holding nut & sheered off the end of the wishbone...doh !! ::)
So I had to go to FMD & shell out for another new wishbone  :(

So I've still got a perfectly good wishbone (done about 5000 miles) with a sheered off end & one of the old shot ones with a good end....

....So, old end on newish wishbone = perfectly good wishbone  ;)

Can it be done ?  :)

You could try heating it in case it's loctited in.
Don't know what temp but a job I sometimes have to work on involves removing a 30mm thread through a plastic electrical enclosure which is just starting to melt before the thread will budge. You have to keep it hot or it resets.

Tompion......I have tried heating it with a small blow torch, but as you say, maybe it needs to be alot hotter before it will budge  :)

Maybe I'll stick it in the BBQ & leave it for a while  ;)
