Title: Cleaned MAF No Improvement - still crazy
Post by grandadman on Oct 18th, 2007, 7:48pm
Hi All, I did as suggested yesterday and disassembled the MAF sensor located the small filament etc, bought some carb cleaner and gave it a good wash and brush up without the brush and when I was finished it was squeaky clean, so I reassembled ithe air intake area making sure everything was battened down as it should be because I am a bit of a perfectionist and took the car out to my ring road for a test drive. Whilst the system/engine was cool the car performed quite normally and as it got warmer it started doing it's daft tricks like -
1. Jumping out of gear and staying out until the vehicle stops.
2. The engine revs up to 3000 RPM no drive I slow down and then thump! it re-engages
3. As I am driving up my road it is still doing weird things that I am not able to control.

NOTE: When I started the car up after I cleaned the MAF Sensor it started hunting and after a minute or two it stopped. This hunting, if that is the right term, disappointed :( me somewhat as I thought on start up from cold the engine would tick over at about 750/850RPM steadily
After the the road test drive the car sat on my drive as if it had never misbehaved steady idle about 750RPM all gearbox lights working. gears engaging as they should but it was getting dark and I was feeling down hearted that cleaning the electrical MAF sensor hadn't fixed my problem.
Anyone got any further ideas I can try tomorrow  ???

Hi . I reckon you have checked the oil level of the box and found
out that the oil is spot on when the engine is in running  temp?
And the color of the oil is nice red?

There are so many possibilities that can cause this. One that
comes to my mind is that the autoboxoil is not  circulating
properly.

I'm no  expert on the autoboxes, butdue to recent events with
my  Granny Scorps loss of No4 gear, I've been poking my nose
into some hightech autobox literature. Maybe I've got too much
steam in my head from those books now  ::)

That could also sound as if the brake bands are slipping - they
can be adjusted.. On which gear this jump out of the gear
happens?

Some cases with RUST in the autobox have been reported,
this can come from a leakage in the rad where the autobox oil
circulates in/out in order to pickup the right temp.

A failing or incorrect VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

How about having the car scanned at Ford dealer/with someone
from the forum?

The autobox wiring loom can get brittle and can start shorting when the wires are "heating" up. This could cause the solenoids that control the gearchange to fail...

I don't know, a tough cookie - specialist advice needed I reckon.

Thumbs up for you mate.

According to the fault finding section on this site then revs rising & then thumping into gear is indicative of a sticking solenoid, as long as the gearbox is fine. Worst scenario is that the fluid is overheating due to failing drive bands.

If it was a faulty VSS then I think the speedo would be erratic as well  :)

Did you do a battery disconnect/reconnect when you cleaned the MAF. This sometimes works wonders, as it resets the ECU back to factory settings & lets it 're-learn'  ;)
Without a battery disconnect then the ECU may be confused & think that the MAF has a fault & try to compensate for this, possibly having a (temporary) detrimental effect on the running of the car  :)

Hope this helps  :)

Thanks - Yes that power cycle sounds like a good idea.
Many problems with computers can be resolved through the use of a re-boot I guess we are talking microcontrollers all over the place which sometime need resetting - yeah?
I'll be back. --this looks upon reflection tied up to a build up of engine temperature because after the clean up I went out on to my ring road and the car was a flying machine and I thought Grrrreat!! Fixed!!! but I was duly let down with a bump, literally  ;)
[I will make sure I have the radio code!]

Been out tonight for a run before I power cycle the system and the vehicle ran absolutely fabulous. Not a sign of previous problems.

I kept going up and down the ring road quite fast so as to build the temperature right up and surprise, surprise, no problems showed.

I will do a power down tomorrow morning to reset all the microcontrollers and report back.
Thank to everyone for their input on this problem - it is really appreciated  :)
