Hello and welcome  ;D

Intermittent problems can be a nightmare to solve.  :-/

an OBD scan may be your best route otherwise we are just guessing.

a PATS problem wouldnt allow you to crank the engine, more likely a fuel/ wiring problem i'd say

hi sounds silly but whats a obd scan and how do i do it?
could it be a remote control problem?
previous owner said he only brought the remote recently and said he had no problems with using the key?
cheers
andy

Definitely not a remote/immobiliser problem if the engine is cranking.

You might have a member local to you who could do a diagnostic scan, otherwise you would need to try a garage, there may be a fault code stored from when the car failed to start

hi there
is there anybody local who could do a scan?
would you have any idea why the coil pack would not be sending a spark to plugs?
and why would taking the battery off help?
cheers
andy

I wouldnt think disconnecting the battery would help in this case but give it a try if you want.

Is that the problem? the coil pack isnt sending a spark to the plugs?

You seem to have done some investigating, what have you found?

right as i said above used it mon night tue morning and tue evening everything fine and everything working
wed morning would turn over but not fire?
called aa who checked the cranckshaft sensor and coil pack both ok but no spark at plugs???
aa bloke  said could be ecu problem so i found this site and found it could be wet ecu (no battery cover fitted to my car!)
i disconnected battery to tackle the ecu but being still 6am i gave up till it got light but thought i would reconnect battery incase ecu only had short memory so tried to start it after battery being disconnected for 10 mins and hey presto!!!it was all fine again smooth as silk!?
i went to work all fine finished work all fine went to work thursday all fine came home all fine but went to it yesterday afternoon and a non start again?just turning over!?
had to disconnect battery and reconnected and hey presto all fine again?????it seems to have this non start problem eg no spark at plugs but i disconnect battery and reconnect and no problems againfo about a day?
any help very much appreciated
andy

Must be electrical or fuel as i said before but as to diagnosing it then you will need a diagnostic scan done by a garage otherwise it could be a hundred different things to try/replace/or check.

there are various code readers available.
The one regulary used on this site is available from www.obd-2.com in the USA which is very good.

I see you are in Essex from your profile but if you let us know where in Essex someone may be able to help

right just been out to car because its not been used for more then 24hours and it started? now is this because i used the key to lock and unlock the car the last 3 times ???
the previous owner emailed me today to say the second hand remote i got with the car he only brought a few days ago !!  could this be the problem???
previous owner said he never had a problem with the car using the key every day?
or is it just where the car could have dried out since the rain we had tuesday night?
cheers
andy

AGAIN, if the engine is cranking then it is NOT an immobiliser  problem or anything to do with the remote

You stated that you have no battery cover on the car - have your starting problems occurred just after rain ?
Maybe you need to check the fusebox near the battery for any signs of damp.

yes they did
i have nothing above the battery not even a retraining strap or bracket?
and it wouldt start after all the rain we had tuesday night but did after i disconnected the battery for 10 mins!
cheers

When you disconnect the battery it resets everything.

I would guess either there is some water where it should not be or bad wiring/connections somewhere.

It seems like this might be wrong! My 24v (buildt 08.1995) cranks, but will not fire due to an immobiliser problem (code "1.6" on the PATS LED) :(
