Title: Engine cutting out on acceleration
Post by philgood on Oct 29th, 2007, 10:15am
My M reg, 2.9, 12v Auto Ultima has recently developed an engine problem.
After cruising, problem free, for about 60 miles the engine started to cut out / drastic miss fire on acceleration / pulling away from junctions whilst driving around town! I garaged the car for a week without touching it and when I went to reuse it there was no problem but used it again this weekend and within 5 mile it started to cut out on acceleration again but it cleared after about 10 mile and ran normally for over 50 mile. I have previously had a similar fault when the air con was on & never found the fault but can live this fault.
Has anyone else had this problem or any ideas were to start looking?

Do you mean miss fire or back fire

Serious misfire / cutting out but still manages to run! I have checked the relay and all seems to be in order. I used the car today with no problems???

Could be way of the mark here but I had a bike with symptoms similar to what you describe.
To cut a very long and what turned out to be very expensive story short the fuel tank breather was blocked >:(
I only discovered the problem by chance when I happened to take my helmet off before refueling to talk to a mate who pulled up at the next pump.
As I removed the filler cap there was a large hissing sound.
As the fuel was being used it was creating a vacuum in the tank and after 40 to 50 miles the vacuum was strong enough to starve the engine.
Before this I had replaced most of the ignition system, checked timing etc and had it to the dealers three times.
Forgot to mention when the bike was missfiring if I stopped at the side of the road for 15 minutes or so it would just dissapeer for another 40 miles or so.

Sounds like a TPS problem.
Disconect it next time it plays up & see if the problem gets better.

If not look at the map sensor.

Also check timming & reset it correctly in service mode.

Thanks for the advice. I checked the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and connector plug and all seemed ok there. I don’t think that my 2.9 12v has a MAP sensor or I couldn’t find one that resembles one anyway.
I Checked the Distributor cap / rotor arm and ended up replacing both.
Went on a 70-mile journey today with no ill affects at all??? I’m going on a booze cruse Thursday so I’ll see what happens then as long as it doesn’t pack up in France I’ll be ok thanks to AA recovery

You might wanna check the ignition coils, I had the same problem and solved it by replacing the ignition coils

The 12v DOES have a MAP is bolted onto the offside wing near the suspension strut.

Also check ALL the vacum pipes . a loose or broken one CAN cause the syptoms you have described.

French trip went ok, 300 mile with no ill affect. It's getting too cold to mess around under the bonnet so i'll have another poke around when it warms up.

Look for a small black plastic cased module with both vaccum pipes and cable entering it, bolted on the wing.

Last time I had a problem similar to the one you describe (not the Scorp), it turned out to be a partially blocked fuel filter. The time before that was a blocked vent on a fuel filler cap (as someone else mentioned). It would run so many miles, then needed a rest - after which it would run fine again.
