Well done Stuart. While you're at it, can you tell me how to adjust mine so that dip works at all  ???

dipped beam? Not sure what you mean, do you have main beam only?
If so sounds like a switch problem

Yes, main beam works - as does dim/dip but no dipped beam. auto electrician has tested it and it looks as though the problem lies in the fusebox. Have tried exchanging light switch, dip switch and relay with other vehicle and they are all ok.
Now then, whether to by-pass it or spend £130 on a new fusebox. I wonder which it is to be?!
There is an estate in the local scrappie but that might also be faulty given the weakness in them.
For £5 or £10, it might be worth taking the chance. Are they a big job to get off? I can't find removal/fitting instructions - only a rebuild.

They're not to bad to remove. You need to remove the carpet trim and courtesy light from above the pedals and get your head right in there. You will see a plastic mesh below all the connectors. Remove the connectors and undo the 4 8mm bolts holding the fuse box in, then lift out from under the bonnet. Hey presto!! ;)

main beam works  :)

dim/dip works, but no dipped beam ??? what do you mean? do you have side lights, dipped beam ( i know  ;)) and main beam? what year is the car? later cars don't have the dim/dip feature.

It is a P reg.
I have side lightsI have main beam. Dim/dip works so it has it.
Click the indicator stalk to go to dipped beam-no dipped beam-nothing.
Perhaps this is theoretically not possible but believe me, it is happening(or not)

hi there

it could be me not picking you up correctly, but.....

side lights on, no ignition. they should light up at the lowest setting. (1st position on switch)

side lights on with ignition on. they should light up slightly brighter (if dim/dip fitted). (1st position on switch)

dipped beam on with ignition (nothing to do with the light stalk). they should be at their brightest setting. (2nd position on switch)

dipped beam on with ignition, then push light stalk forward towards dash. this is the main beam setting. this is the brightest setting (dipped beam) and another bulb is used to give extra light(3 in total). (2nd position on switch)

is this different to what you get?

Sorry chaps but I don't know what else I can say. I am perhaps not explaining it very well.
All lights work except when you go from the main beam position to dip on the column and then no headlights so they are not working in the dip position. They came back temporarily but then went again which made me suspect the relay but it wasn't. It is not the bulbs - they work. The auto electrician has gone through it and says there is a dead circuit in the main fusebox. He had another one exactly the same last week.
Thanks for your input anyway.

Ok, so when you select dip the headlights go out completely?

If you have changed the switch (for a working one) and the bulbs are ok then it points to a connection fault somewhere in the system, cheapest and easiest solution as you already mentioned may be a bypass

Yup, that's it Stuart. I gather, though, it's not a simple matter on these because of the dim/dip and/or the way the headlights earth.
It wouldn't be!

Try to bypass the fusebox connector from relay exit.
