Title: emissions failure
Post by olley on Nov 4th, 2007, 9:55am
First ever posting!

Can anyonehelp?

My father in law's Scorpio ('93 auto 2.9) has failed mot on emissions. The garage (not a ford specialist!) has tried new lamda probe but thinks it may need a new ecu. Their computer crashes when it is plugged in to the ecu.

Can anything be deteroind by the mot results?   I've posted the Crypton print out on my website in case anyone can shed any light...

Very grateful for any assistance or ideas!!!  :)

hi there

this website/forum is for the scorpio from 1995 (froggy), so you're better trying g&s online (http://www.granada-and-scorpio-online.com/forums/index.php?s=).

re the printout, all your figures are miles out! how's the car running? is it drinking petrol?

Many thanks I'll try the g&s online. The car apparently does about 25mpg.

25mpg is doing well for a 2.9
I had the same model and couldn't get more than 19mpg average out of it !

Yes, well what I've been told about the car and reality may not actually correspond. I take what I've been told with a pinch of salt!

try removing the air filter , I'm told this is a 'cheap' fix for the emissions test. worth a go before spending a fortune .

If it,s one of the earlier 2.9 s,the air flow meters will be a good place to start looking when suffering emission problems.Remove them & give them a good cleaning with carb cleaner first. Also over time the tamper proof adjustment screws can come loose (under the meter itself).Ford say you shouldnt play around with these but in my experiance i found if you wind the adjusting screw,s all the way in ,then back them off 3 full turns ,this will usually give you a correct setting for the air flow.Good luck
