Title: Gearbox issue
Post by pinto on Nov 5th, 2007, 4:59pm
Finally got my first scorp !;D

Shes a 2.3 Ghia X on the 96 P, but she has an issue with the tranny (automatic)

Basically, she lurches when picking up drive - its not instantanious like I'd expect, and although she drives fine and shifts up and down through all the gears, when subjected to full power, she deffinately slips :(

I've thought about trying a few things like oil change and a new box filter, but am I wasting my time ? is she more likely to be terminal ? should I be looking for a new box ?

Thanks in advance for your help  :D

If you have not done so have a read of THIS page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm). Scroll down to the  transmission section. More details HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autogearbox.htm)

114K... and the gearbox oil appears to be red as it should be, but thats not to say the owner before me hasn't attempted something and changed / added to it.

Looks like I should be choosing the AA option then  :(

As said, clean the MAF first, can make a HUGE difference to a car, particularly the gearbox behaviour.

Second, if the 'box oil is a reasonable colour then I would consider changing it, and the filter, if you are unsure of when it was last done.

Hi, after cleaning your maf and checking its earth with a meter if you have one, set the meter to ohms range and check the earth between the maf connector and a good body earth/ battery, should only read 1 or 2 ohms, if it reads more you may need to rewire it. (black wire, goes to earth point behind the dash)
If your box still slips then i would check brake band adjustment, you dont need a special tool just a 10mm ring spanner and a 17 or 19 for the lock nut, slacken off the lock nuts and wind in the adjusters in until semi tight (about 10ft/pnd ,1 finger on the end of the spanner) then back the forward band (the one nearest to bell housing) off 8 flats(2 turns) and the center band back off 6 flats (1 1/2 turns) tighten the lock nuts but make sure the adjuster dont move when tightening.
Not recommended to change the fluid unless your referbing (not hard, but a big job) the hole box, check fluid spec carefully, the internals of these boxes changed in 96/97 to 4R44E(same as A4LDE as did the fluid spec.  most retail atf contains detergent which will dislodge deposits in the box and you could risk clogging up the valve body.
Hope that helps.
