Title: Glowing charging light 2.9 12v Ultima '95
Post by clive_tb on Nov 9th, 2007, 6:18pm
I have a glowing charging light, getts brighter with higher revs.

Probably the alternator. Hopefully the rectifier pack which is much cheaper than a new unit

What alternator is on the car?

How available are rectifier packs?

Where can I get one?

Can it be fitted without removing the alternator?

Any help or advice would be appreciated – it's years since I had to take spanners to a car! By the way, I live out in the sticks (Essex) and there are not many useful garages around here.

Your diagnosis is MOST likely correct. As to diode/rectifier packs I do not know of the availabilty but i would have thought it needs taking out to fix really . Exchange units are reasonable cheap though.. Ihave found that they readily available..

Check for Power steering fluid dripping onto the rear of the alternator. well documented fault .

Many thanks Snoopy.

Definately power steering fluid on the alternator.

Does cleaning it off rectifiy the problem without replacement do you know? (carb cleaner here I come!)

I still have no idea what alternator should be on the car though.

:o DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SPRAY CARB CLEANER ON TO ANY PLASTIC PARTS. IT WILL MELT THEM. :o i found this out the hard way.

Just changed my 12v alternator.Cost £60 exchange which i thought wasnt too bad.It is however a bit fiddly to fit,& you will need access both above & below the car (slackening belts / tentioners from top . Removal /refit from underneath). In the end i wished id payed the garage an hours labour to fit it (getting lazy in my old age)  ;D ;D
