Title: cracked inlet manifold
Post by Rien on Nov 12th, 2007, 2:27pm
Hello,

First let me say hello to this great Scorpio community. I already had the pleasure of meeting some of you on the mailing list regarding a question about gearbox oil.

I'm the owner of a very recently purchased '98 2.3 which is in great condition, except for a (so I learned) quite common problem with the 2.3 engine.
It's got a cracked inlet manifold.

My questions are:

-Provided that I'm an medium skilled DIY mecanic. How straightforward would it be to replace it? Would the job be better suited for a professional garage?

-Is it true that these manifolds are quite rare?

-Perhaps I didn't search hard enough, but I wasn't able to find the relevant part of the repair manual on the website. Is there a part that describes this operation?

thanks in advance

The only instructions for the inlet manifold replacement can be found here.....

They are quite rare second hand but not impossible to find (try Ebay). New ones are in the region of £280  :o

Welcome to the site  :)

Just a thought.......have you considered trying to repair it ?....it's a cheaper option  ;)

As long as the split isn't too large then it can be done (I've done it). I used a hot knife to seal the split inside & out, & then patched it up inside & out with some JB Weld & then added Quick Steel over the top to give it extra strength.

That was 8 months ago & it's still holding strong after 16K miles  :)

Tip..... make sure the manifold is roughened up with heavy grade sand paper & then thoroughly cleaned of grease & dirt before you apply the JB Weld, Quick Steel etc  ;)
