Title: Bag of HAMMERS ????
Post by grandadman on Nov 16th, 2007, 11:18pm
When  my Cossie 24V starts up the engine sounds as though it had a bag of hammers within, then after 1 or 2 seconds it quietens down to a nice sound.

Can anybody advise what this could be  ???

I have an idea or two but no experience at all  :-[

Timing chain and /or (doesn't the 24v have hydraulic tappets? ).

At a guess Timing chains .. Might just need new tensioners for the chains which is quite an easy DIY Job have a look HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/timingchain29cos.htm) Others on the site might be able to help more

yep as above mine rattles too, castrol magnatec helps alot. if i leave the car for a week it gives about a 2 second rattle. if started daily no rattle at all [53,000 mile engine]

think this is a common problem on the 24v's

naff chain tensioners that drain of oil when the engine is off

hi there

a way to help this problem is to start the engine (from cold) using the Wide Open Throttle method.

FULLY open the throttle and while keeping the pedal on floor, turn the engine over for a few seconds. this will build up the oil pressure a bit, thus reducing the chain rattle (engine won't start as the ecu thinks it's flooded).

now the bad bits. :(

your WOT relay/TPS  MUST working correctly. a 24v with a dodgy chain doesn't sound nice when starting at 6000rpm when cold!!! :o if the engine fires with your foot on the floor, switch it off right away.

you need a good battery to cope with the longer starts.
