Title: Oil pressure light flickering.
Post by ChrisF on Nov 17th, 2007, 8:09pm
My oil pressure light flickers when the engine is hot and it is ticking over, it goes out as soon as I put the slightest pressure on the accelerator, the tickover shows about 850 revs. Is this normal.

hi there

no, no, no! you shouldn't have low pressure (if it is ;)).

do you know the service history (oil grade and when last changed) of the car? it needs good quality sae 5w-30 oil.

if that side of it is fine, then it could be a faulty oil pressure sensor. is there any rattles from the engine? has this just started?

hth

That happened to mine when first bought  :o

The last service was 12k before and the oil was WELL ready for a change.

*shudder*

Fortunately an immediate oil change cured it and regular changes since have kept it fairly happy *touch wood*  ;D

Check the wiring to the oil pressure switch.Mine was in poor condition & grounding out against the block causing the light to flick on.Pressure switch is the next on the list to check. To be on the safe side though, probably best you dont drive it until it,s sorted  :(

Do you ever use an engine flush before changing the oil ?

I've always used 'Wynns engine flush' before every oil change. It clears the oilways & oil pump of sludge & deposits which would normally cause clogging up.

If the engine isn't flushed at oil changes, then it's possible for the oil pump to become clogged with sludge & not work efficiently, & as a result, cause an oil pressure problem...same with the oilways  :)

Hope this helps  ;)

hi,  i had this problem on my scorpio..last year...oil light would flicker after a long run.....i was worried..so i took the switch out and put in a oil pressure gauge and adapter from a mk2 granada....started the engine...i need not have worried...oil pressure was fine..at idle and in gear (auto)...i called into the local auto shop to buy a new oil pressure switch...put it in..not more problems..hope its the same in your case....good luck..regards den.
