I am a bit of a perfectionist to the point of being a pain in the posterior []

Take a look at THIS (http://www.x100p.co.uk/rfb.html) -am I being a little too OTT worrying ???

Despite having replaced those bushes myself, I can't quite work out from the photos what has gone wrong - but certainly it looks very wrong. You are right to be worried!

hi there

it's been an age since i done mine, so i can't remember exactly, but looking at the diagram, the washers should be only at the end.

If you look where the arrow is, he has put a large washer on the the rear facing bearing shaft, then the rubber bearing assembly and tightened the whole thing very tight before fitting the wishbone to the vehicle.
I hope this clarifies it a bit better  :-/

I think you are right scorpio_man  []

Regarding the wishbone rear bush...yes, that washer should be there & if you look closely at it (when it's removed) you will see it is shaped inwards on one side around the hole, so it fits snug to that part of the wishbone  :)

Just to clarify, there are two washers, one either side of the bush  :)

Also, it shouldn't have been tightened before the wishbone was fitted. It should be tightened after the wishbone is fitted & the weight of the car is on the ground, otherwise it will exert extra pressure on the bush & the bush will fail prematurely  :)

Hope this helps  ;)

Here's a picture of what it should look like .
I think it's OK, the washer should go between the bush
and the rear shoulder of the wishbone.

I thought for a minute it had been put on the wrong way round.

Have a look at THIS (http://www.x100p.co.uk/exploded.html) which is what scorpio_man suggests - clarified a bit more

The washer is shown...it's number 23. The diagram isn't very clear about it going on before the bush. But if you think about it logically, why would you need two washers at the end ?  ???

The bad news in this dilemma is that the washer only apears on the OSF drivers side which is what started me thinking is that right  ???  :-/

Go back to the mechanic & ask him to put a washer on the other side. He doesn't have to remove the whole wishbone, just undo the rear holding nut & 4 clamp bolts, lever the arm down & pull the bush off. It shouldn't take too long  :)

Yeah jonnycab I do think that you are right!

so the sequence would be shaft then>  [refer to diag for#]

1. large washer [#23]
2. rubber bearing assy [#7]
3. washer [#22]
4. 18mm nut [#20]

We are nearly there - one last thing - The recommended torque for this particular

retaining nut [#20]   ???

OK you are absolutely right - I'll sleep tonight  ::)

There doesn't seem to be a recommended torque for this nut (20), it should just be tight.

But not super tight though, I once managed to shear off the end of the wishbone by trying to get it as tight as possible  ???..... ::)

Looks as though THIS (http://www.x100p.co.uk/wash.html) washer is OK  []

Thanks scorpioman for your guidance and help and thanks to everyone else

Good night

I have updated my latest picture which really puts this matter to rest - it looks as though my mechanic has messed up with his sequence of re-assembly of the parts and I picked it up!

But I did say at the begining I am a bit pedantic and I like things done according to the 'book' especially when I am shelling out good money to the experts of this world

btw the latest and last pic is THIS (http://www.x100p.co.uk/wash.html) one

That looks more like it, well done :D

I like things to be right too!

No doubt the bush would have suffered rapid wear with the incorrect washer fitted.

Now you see what I mean about those 'shaped inwards towards the hole for a snug fit' washers  ;)

Title: Re: This suspension problem is driving me nuts!
Post by grandadman on Dec 6th, 2007, 12:14pm
Exactly jonnycab  :D

Just out of interest, is the order/wishbone shaft/ shaped washer toward the shaft/flat side towards the centre steel of the rubberbearing/rubberbearing/smaller washer then 18 mm nut with the whole thing secured to the chassis by a cradle held on by four small bolts  ???

Title: Re: This suspension problem is driving me nuts!
Post by jonnycab on Dec 6th, 2007, 1:50pm
Yes, that sounds about right...only other thing to consider is that the bush is mounted to the chassis with the gap around the front edge facing north  :)

...and don't tighten it up until the cars weight is resting back on its wheels.
