Title: Sooty build-up on HT lead contact
Post by Mike_Floutier on Dec 1st, 2007, 8:20am
Where my HT lead plugs into one of the coil packs, I'm getting a "sooty" deposit forming. The other coil pack is fine; really Shiny.

I've tried cleaning it. I can get it really clean but it just soots up again.

I'm wondering if this is causing my poor idling.

My question is, can I put some gel or something on the coil plug that will help the electrical continuity and prevent this build-up of soot.

Thanks

Mike

sure sign of HT leakage, it will damage the insulation providing a track line in time.

What's the likely problem do you think?

Is it a poor contact, if so would some sort of electrical gel help.

Thanks

Mike

Its most likely coming from the LEADS themselves they are ussually carbon based string inside to stop interference. I would check the leads

I've just bought from FMD some Contact Grease.  It goes in the HT lead plug socket and is supposed to prevent tracking.

Finis 1122540   approx. £12 for a 100g tube

Thanks Mike I'll have to try that.

By the way it's interesting to note that I've started having problems with my HT leads since I first replaced them - I'm now on the second replacement set and on both occasions I've opted for the cheapo versions.

I run the car on LPG and as you may know, it takes a much more powerful park to ignite the lpg mixture than for petrol.

I'm wondering if the combination of this extra strain on the ignition wiring combined with the nature of the cheapo ht leads has led to their premature breakdown.

Mike
