Title: electrical problems ?
Post by CRISPY on Jan 13th, 2008, 12:48pm
hi, new to this site, i've got a n reg scorpio ultima  12v 2.9  v6 engine, owned for just over 4 yrs. from day 1 battrey lite is permanantly on dash, been told this is a common prob with these cars.
about 1 month ago, whilst driving at nite, car stopped without warning, restarted wiv jump leads. same thing happened again 2 days later !
RAC came out, he thought loose contact in fuse board.auto elec man came out, too much effort to get fuse board out, said it could be that or engine loom which has been worked on about 3yrs ago due to non -starting probs.or could be alternator. don't really want to spend too much money as i plan to get another car this year. any advice greatfully received

Check the battery voltage with engine not running, with it running and with the electrics under load (all lights on) and doing 3,000 RPM. Should be 12.5v or a bit higher, 13.7 to 14.2 and 13.7 as a minimum respectively.

You can use the dash diagnostics as a means to measure the voltage - with the ignition on, press and hold the odometer trip reset button for >10 seconds until all of the LCD symbols show, now press the button repeatedly until you see 'Batt' in the display with a number below. The number below is the battery voltage.
