Title: Glowing Altenator
Post by Matt on Jan 19th, 2008, 1:07pm
hi all,

got what could be a serious problem, did around 40 miles in the car no problem, got home and parked up, when to the shop (mile round trip) about an hour later and on the way back had smoke and an electrical burning smell, got the bonnet up and could see what looks like a small coil in the alternator glowing red hot and smoke pouring off it. theres no symptoms other then the smoke and the hot bit, belts are  ok and it spins freely with no grinding noise

any body got any ideas?

Sounds like it has gone ... Its trying to act as a motor and drawing current from the battery . You need to get it checked ASAP. Mor than likely the rectifier pack o the back has gone.
One way to check is to take the drive belt off and see if the alternator starts spinning on its own in the worst case scenario.
